dunno about perfect but this is how i do it...peel, core, chop and cook some apples in a saucepan with a couple of tbsp of sugar until they are softened but not gone to mush (about three big apples for six people). tip into a dish and mix in some blackberries - i use roughly two thirds apple to a third blackberries. add about half a teaspoon of cinnamon.
for topping (for about 6, if there's too much it freezes well) 225g plain flour (or replace some of the flour with porridge oats), 110g butter, 75g soft brown sugar.
to make it: chop the cold butter into cubes, rub into the flour with your fingers until it goes like breadcrumbs (if it clumps together try rubbing between your hands). stir in the sugar. there is a nice nigel slater recipe too for almond crumble with 120g plain flour, 85g butter, 4tbsp caster sugar and 4tbsp ground almonds which would be nice with blackberries.
pack the topping onto the fruit, not too thinly. sprinkle a bit more cinnamon on top. into the oven at 200C for about 30-40 mins or until the blackberry juices start bubbling over top of crumble. make custard. damn am hungry now
