can i use self raising flour instead of plain flour?

Ive promised DS that we would make chocolate button cookies today but the receipe asks for plain flour and ive just looked in my cupboard and only have self raising flour. can i still use it? Or will it end up a total mess?

Thanks pippi, that saves me a trek to the shops. Can i just ask too the receipe says baking powder...should i still add this if im using sr flour?
