Outside of cake overcooked. What do i change?

just made a madeira cake - inside was cooked to perfection but the outside was a bit thick and overcooked. do i reduce the cooking time or reduce the heat next time? or reduce the cooking and increase the heat??

Or put a double layer of brown paper round the outside (my mum always did this for Christmas cake to keep the edge moist)

or put the tin inside your roasting tin whilst cooking it, to protect it from some of the heat.

Reduce the heat. I have an aga which is stinking hot and always does this to cakes.
