Last year I visited my brother in London and we went to a pie and mash restaurant near the West End. I can’t remember the name but you had a choice of about 10 different types of mash to choose from. I’m a bit bored of regular mash, does anyone have any recipes for something a bit different please?

Add cheese, various types. Try brie, parmesan, gruyere etc.
Add truffle oil.
Add garlic.
Add parsley.
Add bacon lardons.
Add smoked butter.
Half sweet potatoes half normal.
Half swede.
Add some carrot mash.
Add some spring greens.
Add some onions and mushrooms.
Add red peppers.

Was it Mother Mash?

Google Stoemp. It's a Flemish dish and has some variants. Absolutely delicious with sausages.

I like mustard stirred in, with or without cheese.

Quick extras include stirring in whole grain mustard, or horseradish, topping with cheese and bake in the oven, half sweet potatoes half ordinary, add steamed cabbage and sautéed onions, add spring onion, add garlic and chopped parsley.

I do add mustard or horseradish regularly as it doesn’t take extra time and adds zing, the others require more planning

Yes! I love horseradish mash, always use it when topping a cottage pie!

Add horseradish. Delicious.

I had black pudding mash in a restaurant before, it was delicious but never made it myself.

I love Rumbledethumps too. Agree with adding horseradish or mustard.

Wasabi mash is tremendous, with teriyaki salmon and steamed tender stem broccoli

My DCs like carrot and parsnip mash. We also do half sweet potato / half ordinary potato mash quite often

Try half celeriac and half potato, with roasted garlic and rosemary stirred in, plus warm milk and butter for a smooth texture. It tastes quite different from plain mash. A colcannon style version with shredded cabbage and leek folded through also works well with sausages or a pie.
