  • 1kg/2lb 4oz chicken thigh fillets (around 12 thighs), boneless and skin removed

Do I start with 1kg of chicken or end with 1kg of chicken having removed the skin and bones?

I read it as you basically need 1kg of chicken thighs with the skin and bones removed - it's the amount of meat that is going into the slow cooker that matters.

Basically buy this! https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/groceries/product/sainsburys-1kg-british-chicken-thigh-fillets

10cupsofcoffeeplease · 25/10/2026 21:42

It's the weight of the raw chicken thighs without skin and bones.

MadBlack · 25/10/2026 21:43

No, you buy 1 kg thighs boneless and skinless to start with

Dartmoorcheffy · 25/10/2026 21:45

Just buy 12 chicken thighs. I wouldn't worry about the weight as it won't affect the end result.

Can you actually buy this?

Yes you can. I get it in Sainsbury's

bababamama · 25/10/2026 21:49

Every British supermarket sells chicken thigh fillets, typically in 500g packs (which make 3-4 portions)

Tesco too! https://www.tesco.com/shop/en-GB/products/304380429?srsltid=AYCX9vJmDlxwlT9rKtID2wHKxFH7aOUW-0FLc6ET7Mtf9QtzPnFMrR8p

Plus your local butchers will and probably any of the other big supermarkets too. Enjoy your dinner!

And often also in 1kg packs which is cheaper per unit weight

GrumpyPanda · 25/10/2026 21:51

You don't need exact measurements fir this type of recipe. Looks delicious!

5289843DM · 25/10/2026 21:52

If you have the time, I'd just skin and de-bone them myself for 1/3 of the price. In a slow cooker recipe, the weight of the skin and bones is likely the same as just 1 thigh, so its not going to change the finished product significantly. You are overthinking this OP!

alexdgr8 · 25/10/2026 21:55

Even I know that most shops sell them and I don't even eat chicken..
Or do any real cooking. How come you don't know this when you obviously do real cooking.
Not being rude just genuinely puzzled ?

canklesmctacotits · 25/10/2026 21:56

“To fillet” means to remove the bones from
something. Mostly used wrt fish. Never heard of chicken thigh fillets!

ha, for the sake of some fussy people we almost exclusively eat chicken breast. I do make coq au vin occasionally but use thighs with skin and bone on.
Obviously I could remove and maybe I will as it's probably quite a bit cheaper that way.

??
Am I living in a parallel universe.??
Shops that sell frozen food are full of every variety of prepared chicken
Strips. Cubes. Diced. Minced. Coated nuggets. Sliced. with or without flavourings etc.
Whole. Half. Portion. Legs. Breast... etc.
I almost wish I did eat it.
It looks so convenient

ImogenBrocklehurst · 25/10/2026 22:03

Fillet them yourself and keep the bones for stock.

shellyleppard · 25/10/2026 22:05

@UserName00747 yep all the supermarkets sell skinless boneless chicken thighs. I use them in curries or slow cooker chicken casserole ❤️

alexdgr8 · 25/10/2026 22:05

Sorry OP. My last comment was in response to someone else who asked if you could buy filleted chicken thighs.
Not a retort to your reply to my first comment.
I'm a bit slow.
In various ways.

Enjoy your chicken.

Ha, it’s the other way round for us - I find it so much easier to make chicken thighs come out nicely than chicken breast - it is way more prone to being dry or stringy, whereas I don’t think it’s even possible to make chicken thighs taste bad.

(of course chicken breast can be lovely, but it’s easier to mess up I think).
