Breakfast ideas for busy mornings

As some dc are already back and others are returning shortly, many people are back thinking about breakfast again. As it gets cooler, warm food seems better.

Let’s post ideas to share….

my starter for 10 is freezer pancakes, I spotted this today though use to do this for my dc when at primary school

i use milk rather than buttermilk as not available widely in the U.K., make vegan by substituting the milk and switching the egg for mashed banana, it really works. Alternative flours like buckwheat make it gluten free.

Cereals and/or toast.

Anything more than that is for the weekends.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 01/09/2026 07:51

A slice of toast?

CarrieOakie · 01/09/2026 07:55

frittata packed with sundries tomato, peppers, peas and gerbs

make a sheet pan of them and cut into 6

then place between 6 bagels or bagel thins

pop a slice of smoked cheese or cheese on top and then wrap in tin foil

pop in airfryer for 9 minutes

its an Emily English recipe

Overthebow · 01/09/2026 07:57

Mine usually have porridge with banana or toast.

Autumnleaveandthegrass · 01/09/2026 07:59

Great thread OP.

My kids used to love tray bake blueberry pancakes but got bored of them.

I’m a convert to overnight oats.

My kids are more brunch people so despite being up early often don’t want breakfast until they’re about to leave the house.

CarrieOakie · 01/09/2026 08:05

I do chocolate porridge with frozen cherry & yogurt - I soak overnight before cooking or if in a rush don’t cook & just eat

again I meal prep 6 for the week

teaspoon of cocoa
3rd cup of oats, 3rd a cup of water
half a cup of cherrys, blueberries or mango frozen

pop everything in to soak in 6 jam jars

add a a small amount of water or milk to saucepan and gently heat, add yogurt to porridge crooking or if eating raw

i do also buy croissants frozen from Sainsbury, M&S or Aldi, they take 15 minutes to cook in the morning and I make a hot chocolate to give to my students as they rush out the door, to eat on the bus on the way to college

Overnight oats! You can really experiment with different flavours of milk, adding fruit, seeds, yogurt etc

Tunaboona · 01/09/2026 08:30

My DD has to be out of the house by 7:30 so we have been thinking about 'foods you can run to the bus stop with'. Mostly it's toast, waffle (frozen and quickly defrosted), perhaps a small pot of overnight oats.

Jellycatspyjamas · 01/09/2026 08:30

Toast, cereal or porridge, or waffles toasted with fruit. Nothing complicated in the mornings here.

KidsAndDogsGalore · 01/09/2026 08:33

Oats, yogurt & raspberries. As I use frozen, I have to heat them up in the microwave... taking the chill out of the yogurt.

DC have something like wheatabix with hot milk.

SillyGooseyGander · 01/09/2026 08:42

I do egg muffins, kind of an homage to the McDonald's breakfast but without the bacon or sausage. This is actually prepared in less than 5 minutes.

Lightly toasted Wholemeal English muffin, a fried egg, and a slice of cheese.

Two of my kids love that and would happily eat that plus a banana or apple each morning.

My teen DD is not a lover of egg or cheese, so will typically have yoghurt, frozen berries + oats with honey. She likes the berries straight from the freezer, still frozen, which I think is mind-boggling but it does make it quicker to prepare, so I'm not complaining!

Thanks for this idea. I’ve also seen a recipe that cooks the pancakes in a sheet pan and then cuts them into squares. So you can easily make 12 at a time, then serve dusted with sugar and fresh fruit.

RowsOfFlowers · 01/09/2026 11:33

Toast, fruit, yoghurt granola and fruit
overnight oats?

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 01/09/2026 11:36

I’ve never done overnight oats because I really don’t fancy cold porridge, do people heat them before eating?

BlumeUndTisch · 01/09/2026 11:37

We have

Brown toast - butter, cheese, ham and jam.
Cereals/porridge and milk.
Add an apple/orange/banana/carrot.

It doesn't need to be fancy.

You can let porridge sit in a slow cooker, have a timer so it starts a few hours before waking. But I found this creates kind of oat jelly rather than porridge.

HorseandHeron · 01/09/2026 12:28

beans on toast
egg on toast
banana and honey porridge
seedy bagels or wholemeal toast with peanut butter or cream cheese or cheese or ham

CurlewKate · 01/09/2026 12:31

Toast.

bababamama · 01/09/2026 12:40

For older ones/early starts I recommend savoury muffins - grated carrot, grated courgette, half and half wholemeal/white flour, cheese (I like to use very strong cheddar or Stilton) plus olive oil, baking powder and eggs. Easy to easy on the go. You can make carrot and cheese flapjacks/ oat cakes as well for on the go snacks. The muffins freeze, flapjacks store well so all can be prepared in advance.

i started making these things to save money really, school breakfast was too expensive, packaged bars not cheap and full of upf’s

Porridge, beans on toast or Weetabix with hot milk in my house. If I had the time for savoury muffins or flapjacks, I’d probably leave those for the summer.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 01/09/2026 13:09

Breakfast muffins
scrambled eggs
bacon sandwich
pancakes

No, they are raw not cold, bit like eating muesli

the idea is the soaked oats release the goodness into your body before being deposited elsewhere

Ive made all types of flavours from carrot cake to tiramisu

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 01/09/2026 20:17

Thanks @CarrieOakie but not for me I think.

I heat mine before I eat it for this same reason, it works out fine, I don’t heat it till piping hot just enough that it’s warm.

We have dairy and egg allergies in our house so this is a nightmare. I guess we could eat a raw carrot.
