Reasonable tasting vegan alternatives to cheddar and feta, any recommendations?

Is there any such thing as a reasonable tasting vegan cheese or does it just not exist? I’m looking for a replacement for cheddar and feta - has anybody got some good recommendations?

My vegan friends assure me there is no replacement for any real cheese.

beigetriangle · 19/08/2026 17:58

couldn't find any.
if you are looking for a pasta topping try blitzing together tofu and peanuts. still not cheese but quite satisfying

Worldgonecrazy · 19/08/2026 17:59

Vegan “cheese” is the work of the devil. I once had vegan mozzarella on a pizza and it looked like the chef had added ‘special sauce’. Vile stuff.

I like Violife Greek White, but it's not really like feta, it's less salty. For some things I find that nicer.

Applewood smoky vegan cheese is OK too.

RaininSummer · 19/08/2026 18:09

No they are all pretty horrible and nothing like cheese.

Thank you - I saw the violife cheese and will give it a go. I’m not expecting it to taste like feta, but just want something to occasionally use in salads.

Thanks all and yes, I thought as much! 😆

I’ve recently said goodbye to Greek yogurt and switched to Alpro Greek yogurt - it’s definitely taking some getting use to that’s for sure!

All vegan cheese tastes like feet.

Vegan friends say vegan boursin is pretty decent, I know it's neither cheddar nor feta, violife is absolutely disgusting. Haven't tried them myself but colleague raves about Kinda co vegan cheeses

Sorry I missed this! That looks interesting - will have a good browse.

Are you anywhere near Shoreditch? I’ve got some good ones from our local vegan cheese shop. You can try them all. We did a vegan and regular cheeseboard and even my dad who is very anti any vegan food begrudgingly admitted that they weren’t too bad!

Unfortunately not, which cheese would you recommend?

No such thing, sorry.

thisisajoke22 · 19/08/2026 18:24

Cathedral city is alright. Lidl do a great garlic and herb soft cheese which is very similar to Boursin and only £1.99 a tub. Last year at Christmas I discovered La Fauxmagarie cheese and their blue cheese is incredible!!!!! I ate two packs within days. Waitrose sells it. They have a website so might be worth trying them

All vegan cheese tastes like feet.

But feet taste is cheese like, or the ones I like are! 😁

The nut based ones are good. The coconut based ones are generally horrific.
I use nutritional yeast and mustatd powder to make cheese sauce for lasagne, which is tasty and nutritious.

KittyHigham · 19/08/2026 18:30

This is where I get my alternatives to cheese. They are are a very different product to dairy cheeses obviously but they are a real savoury/umami hit and I really like them. They are completely different to the supermarket vegan 'cheeses' like violife etc. which taste and feel so synthetic. These are fermented cashew products and don't have a waxy, cheese texture. More like a firm pate consistency.

UrOutdoors · 19/08/2026 18:32

The best thing to do IMHO is to find alternatives that work in particular situations. My partner has been a vegan since about 1987 so we’ve tried everything. Instead of cheese on toast, peanut butter on toast. Instead of a Greek salad, pita bread with Greek salad and black olive tapenade instead. Instead of eggs in shakshuka, chunks of sautéd smoked tofu. Instead of traditional pesto on pasta, one of the cheese-free vegan friendly ones. Instead of a cheese sandwich, a sandwich with grated carrot, slices of beetroot, and hummus. If it’s fatty and flavoursome, it will work!

I remember the blue one being pretty good, and would be lovely in a salad with some pear and walnuts. I think they also stock it in Waitrose.

I tend to steer clear of all the vegan substitutes with coconut in them, and like you use a lot of mustard and nutritional yeast.

Hummus works much better on a pizza than vegan cheese. It's not nice at all.

CoffeeMakesTheWorldBetter · 19/08/2026 18:34

Cathedral city extra mature is the closest to a strong creamy cheddar

I will miss blue cheese - I like it with pecans and butternut squash.

I’ve just had a look on the Waitrose website and as you say the stock some of the Shoreditch range - will definitely give it a try.

I don’t eat pizza 😆 I don’t eat a lot of cheese but there are times when it’s called for, like a grating a parmesan here and there.

Be quite soaring with it, it's got strong sweaty sock vibes. I've not a found a cheddar worth having. Violife Epic is the least offensive and with Marmite or pickle not bad in a sandwich. I'm fed up.with other vegans declaring things amazing when they all taste the same and are pretty bad. La Fauxmagerie do a cheddar which is quite soft and tangy and that's nice in its own right, but doesn't taste like dairy cheese. Waitrose stock it
