Blackberries

My blackberries are as big as boulders this year. I can’t understand why, because I haven’t watered them even once. I bought the plant a few years ago from Aldi.

What is everyone making with their blackberries? I have so many! Am thinking maybe a crumple with apple. Not sure what else to try. I have a bumper crop this year.

SpareVanKeys · 14/08/2026 03:29

A dessert of toasted oats, blackberries and Greek yoghurt (or ice cream depending on preference) is good.

Blackberry vinegar which is delicious used in salad dressings or drizzled on goats cheese

Bramble jelly

Blackberry gin

We're mainly eating them on cereal, but made a yummy crumble the other week. I have two young kids - they don't last long enough to make other things 😆

PermanentTemporary · 14/08/2026 07:14

I haven’t felt like cooking so mostly have been eating them straight off the bush Blush

DamsonIcecream · 14/08/2026 07:26

Blackberry granita this year - we’ve done three batches using the brambles in the garden (I’m clearly a terrible gardener) and it’s been the hit of the season - sweet, sherberty and takes ten mins to make.

bitontheobtuse · 14/08/2026 08:51

People buy blackberry plants and grow them in their gardens? Fancy that. We just go for a walk down the fields and pick what we need. The hedgerows have been absolutely dripping with them this year.

Anyway, recipes. DH has a few on his breakfast every morning. We freeze most of the ones we collect. I just chuck a handful into the mix whenever I'm making a fruit crumble.

Autumnleaveandthegrass · 14/08/2026 08:53

I made an apple and blackberry crumble earlier this week but it’s feel like crumble weather.

TheLurpackYears · 14/08/2026 08:57

Yes, this person bought a blackberry plant and planted it in her garden! I wanted a productive plant with some hight that would grown on a windy slightly shaded corner, it is doing amazingly well this year, best crop ever. Me and the dc are eating them as we walk past. If I was going to use them in the kitchen, I’d bake some sort of almond and blackberry tart.

marylou25 · 14/08/2026 13:25

I planted blackberries basically because they are thornless but found them tasteless in comparison to the wild ones, they are more similar to supermarket big ones so I eventually just chopped them down. Now I pick the wild ones every year and freeze some for using over winter in apple and blackberry tarts and a nice pear and blackberry cobbler recipe that I like. They freeze extremely well and can just be used from frozen.

PauliesWalnuts · 14/08/2026 13:31

I make bramble jelly with my late mum's recipe (but used it as ordinary jam) - I have a long list of people wanting a jar. Some have been frozen and will be used in crumbles and pies over the winter. I love blackberry time.

Here’s something that might truly blow your mind: some people live in cities, big conglomerations far away from fields. And SOME people on these cities live in these things called flats, so they have no garden OR field and they have to BUY their blackberries 😱

And SOME other people buy blackberry plants, put them in their garden and then spend the next 30 years trying to get rid of the damn brambles that have spread everywhere. That's what I was meaning.

Oh that sounds amazing! Would you mind sharing the recipe?

Blackberry whisky is lovely. And when you’ve drunk all the whisky you can put the blackberries on your porridge to give you a kick start on a cold winter morning ( if we ever have one of those again)

Of course - I’ll dig it out and post in the morning.

In fairness, the wild plant which pops over the wall and which is cut back regularly does produce better blackberries. I should be more ruthless with my thornless one.

@Overanddun

The start is a bit vague but I promise it works!

I weigh my blackberries, and then add roughly (doesn’t need to be exact) the same amount of baking apples. So, if I have 2kgs of berries then the same in apples - peel, cores and all. The key is to get a good balance of high pectin fruit and that’s in the apples and especially peel. Basically double up fruit with baking apples.

Put the fruit and quartered apples in a large pan, cover up to three quarters, and bring to the boil, then simmer until mushy. Then cool.

Then, you need to strain all this - I put a colander into a large bowl, then line the colander with a clean baby muslin, and pour the mixture in. Tie the muslin together and hang it up to strain into the bowl - I do it from a wall mounted cupboard door handle - my mum used a Barnes Wallis type chair configuration! Let it drip overnight.

The following day, give the bag a final squeeze with your hands, and discard the fruit in the muslin. Measure the juice and return to a large clean pan. For every pint of juice, you add 1lb of sugar (preferably jam sugar). Boil up until the sugar dissolves and the temp reaches 105c - I use a sugar thermometer but you can also check it with cold plates in the freezer. Pour into sterilised jars, and cover with wax paper circles and then seal.

If you are using metric, the measurements are 450g sugar for every 570 ml of juice.

I have just taken a blackberry and apple tart out of the oven.

i have made a bag of apple and blackberry mix for DMIL’s freezer (and need to add a bag of crumble mix to her freezer), and I will try and add another couple of small bags of apple/blackberries (already seasoned with cinnamon and brown sugar). She commented that she had enjoyed them in previous years and that it was nice to make them up when she wanted but also she could take out a few bags and make a tart with ready-rolled pastry instead.

I had some with Greek yoghurt, raspberries and granola for breakfast earlier in the week.

I hope to throw some into some gin to brew, along with some star anise. We’ll see how many I find before we leave here.

TheOtterly · 16/08/2026 14:48

With all soft fruit I just freeze it to use over the following year.
If short of freezer space I might cook it first.
I have made jam but it seldom gets eaten.
OTOH I do make a crumble every week and eat fruit and yoghurt for pudding every day. In summer it's fresh fruit and the rest of the time it's cooked frozen fruit.

BlackForestCake · 16/08/2026 18:06

Shouldn't need jam sugar if you're using that many apples, ordinary granulated sugar will be just fine.
