No effort self catering in Europe

Our mobile home is very swanky - but due to fire risk no BBQs which is what we usually live on!

We’ve got a hob and a microwave. I don’t mind standing outdoors grilling burgers / sausages / kebabs but don’t really want to be standing over a hob indoors doing the same with just 1 tiny frying pan.

I’ve got some filled pasta.
Done chicken wraps
Love the meat / cheese / bread / salad but only so many times you can eat that
Shite hotdogs

What else can I do with just a frying pan and very little effort??

We often make a big batch of bolognese when in a caravan then reheat and have as tacos/wraps etc.
Have you got nice fish/seafood nearby? Quicker to pan fry than meat and can serve with salad.
Also - we sometimes grab chips from the campsite takeaway and load other bits onto them - sausages, cured meats, cheese, pickles, leftover chicken etc

@AtleastitsnotMondaysorry I should have said I have one very plain eater; I could live off your menu for months very happily but she only eats cucumbers and tomatoes for salad so would be very repetitive for her.

Having said that, she could have something else but I’m loathe to prep 2 meals.

We’re in Italy so won’t attempt a bolognese as she’s literally eating that for every meal out.

Quesadilla
risotto
paella
Tortilla (Spanish Omelette)
Club Sandwich
Steak baguettes

That's annoying about the BBQ.

Do nearby supermarkets sell ready cooked chicken and chips or other nice ready prepared food?

Can you afford to eat out more or get takeaways? If not is it worth buying a second frying pan, even if you leave it behind?

Omelette? Tuna and bean salads with olives, herbs, capers, tomatoes.

Are you the only adult doing the catering? Do you have a partner or teens that can do their share?

TBH if people are 'plain eaters' then repetitive kind of goes with the territory and I'd not be tying myself in knots making extra meals for them.

Salmon and cream cheese bagels
Humous and falafel flatbreads
Feta and red pepper couscous

@Bjorkdiditthats a good point about DD - she’s very happy to live on baguette, ham, toms and cucumber so maybe I should just give in to
that!!

Tortillas and omelettes are great ideas and YES the supermarket has lots of roast chickens we can add campsite chips too.

Kids sorted their own lunch today so that was a breakthrough.

DH gets very stressed cooking and as the kitchen is so titchy he’d fine it even harder. He’s great with his few dishes on rotation at home largely involving the slow cooker or a big old casserole type affair but for everyone’s sake I think it’s best he sticks to bins / washing up / fetcher of takeaways on this trip.

Have you enough power for an electric bbq plate or a George Foreman thing outside?

bestbefore · 14/08/2026 12:51

Best meal ever, green salad, mayo, rotted chicken, baguette and chips. Can’t go wrong!

Crummles1 · 14/08/2026 13:08

Rotted chicken 😂

PatioDwellers · 14/08/2026 13:19

Pizza?

Omelette.

Delis in Italy are good for selling ready made meals that they've made.

Cheese on toast.

OMGitsnotgood · 16/08/2026 12:39

Baked potatoes in the microwave and whatever toppings / sides you all like.

if it’s the pan that’s stopping you pan frying burgers, it might be worth buying a bigger pan ? Might cheaper in the long run that more takeaways, you can do fish/steak/stir fries/ omelette etc.

Also worth just looking round the supermarket for inspiration.

We've just come back from a campsite where charcoal BBQs have been banned but some cabins had gas planchas and there were shared gas BBQs in communal areas for others.

If that's not an option for you, E.Leclerc is currently selling plug-in electric planchas for €20. I bought one to bring back, but it would have worked on our deck if we hadn't had the gas one.
