How many grams of pasta to a jar of, say, Sacla pesto sauce? I never seem to get it right!

I would do 80g pasta per person and a dessert spoon of pesto each.

LoftyPlumLion · 04/08/2026 13:43

I love so many foods and just think pesto is overrated and agricultural.

Sorry, I'm no help - so none in my book.

Now tomato mozzarella is another story entirely

MyOtherProfile · 04/08/2026 13:43

Agricultural? As in from a farm?

Ah you see that’s another problem I seem to have… Just cooked 100g pasta and can’t finish it!

pesto from a ja is not the same as from fresh.

from a jar - about a teaspoon per person
fresh - the whole tub

That's why I specified from a jar beige.

I'm a disgusting pleb so only use jars. Tesco own indeed (the tomato and chilli one is lovely). I use probably 1/3 to 1/2 of a standard size tesco jar per person. I think it's just personal preference.

It's just me and I have half a jar.

CypressMoon · 04/08/2026 17:33

For a family of four, I do an entire bag (500g) of pasta with an entire jar of pesto, maybe some fresh or sun-dried chopped tomatoes, basil, toasted pine nuts or cashews on top, then serve everyone and put the leftovers in the fridge for lunch next day as pasta pesto works fine as a salad. Or reheated in the microwave.

Enrichetta · 04/08/2026 17:35

Have you ever tried to make your own pesto?

It’s so quick and simple and tastes infinitely better than the stuff in jars. There’s just no comparison.

MeThreeTwoOne · 04/08/2026 19:15

And?
It's not as quick as opening a jar, and sometimes quick is what's needed.

EverMissWicklowSometimes · 04/08/2026 19:16

For two portions of pasta I use 3-4 teaspoons of pesto.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 04/08/2026 19:23

Oh dear OP. You mentioned jar pesto. This thread will now derail (already has) in to how you should make your own and jar pesto is disgusting!

A teaspoon of jar pasta per person? Yeah, no thank you. Chuck it on generously - all will be good. It is okay to use a jar pesto. All fed. None dead. And all that.

Bababear987 · 04/08/2026 20:00

Why assume everyone wants to or has the time to make something that they can easily get from a jar?

Goodwitch9 · 04/08/2026 21:13

Wasn't expecting the jarred pesto shaming but thanks for all the helpful replies!

Honestly I used to live on jarred pesto when I was a student. Now I use a food processor to make my own and it's incredibly easy and tasty. You can easily make it in the time it takes the (dried) pasta to cook.

Seaside3 · 05/08/2026 00:55

Im the same as pp. Do the whole bag of pasta, whole jar. Add other veg/cheese/meat, whatever floats ya boat. Left overs for lunches the following day. I'm not really a fan of it, but sometimes especially when I just can't be bothered.

Please say you meant tablespoon?!

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/08/2026 01:52

75g pasta dry and usually 3 full teaspoons of pesto / as can’t get a tablespoon into the jar

Including shopping for ingredients when a quick meal is suddenly needed?

DeftGoldHedgehog · 05/08/2026 02:31

How do you get it wrong? Make the pasta and keep stirring it in until there is enough.

beigetriangle · 05/08/2026 08:42

fresh/jar pesto are very different things. both have their place just like instant/bean coffee <shrugs>

fwiw we like jar pesto instead of butter on bread. for pasta prefer fresh.

OvernightBloats · 05/08/2026 08:45

There's a load of calories stuffed into a small jar of pesto so I use half a jar for 3 helpings (portions). Using more tends to make the meal taste too oily.

I make my own pesto - enough for one meal plus a jar. It literally takes 2-3 minutes and will keep in the fridge for at least a week.

basil - lots of lovely basil
nuts
garlic - lots of garlic
lemon zest and juice
EVOO
salt, pepper + chilli sauce
whisk in the blender
done

I’m rarely without enough pesto for a quick meal.
