Three bean chilli?

I’m a rubbish cook and have chosen three bean chilli when I have been out a couple of times.

my go to chilli recipe is chopped tomatoes, My go-to chilli recipe is chopped tomatoes, passata, chilli flakes, kidney beans and mince. Minus the mice, does this sound like a good base for a three bean chilli? I would use butter beans, Haricot beans and perhaps kidney beans.

Yes it's fine to use any basic chilli recipe. Leave out the meat.

But does your sauce not include onion and garlic?

I tend to use one of the sachets when I make 3 bean chilli, I always find it difficult to get a full flavour without the meat element!

I use Cookie and Kate veg chili receipe. Sometimes I add more beans.
It is my most requested dish to take to house parties. I always serve with Sour cream slices of avocado and flat bread.

I would add a load of veg too - I put chopped peppers, courgette, mushrooms etc as well as the beans. Smoked paprika is also in my chilli.

The chilli kidney beans you can buy in tins at the supermarket are pretty good!

You definitely need onion and garlic.

I prefer mine without mice.

@notacooldad Cookie and Kate recipes are always lovely

@Niftythrifter Pinto Beans are good for any Tex Mex dish and black beans are creamy and nutrition packed

3 Bean Chilli from the Roasting Tin books is a good option if cooking isn’t your thing - throw it all into a tray in the oven to bake. https://cdn.waterstones.com/images/1/4700/recipe%20extract.pdf

It won’t be nice without onion and garlic.

I like to add things that make it less “tomato-ish” so always include a squirt of barbecue sauce and some dark chocolate or cocoa powder plus a couple of teaspoons of instant coffee diluted in a bit of hot water. Sometimes I put one of those stubby bottles of beer in too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/07/2026 20:53

Oh and lime juice.

Aren't they just!
I've never had a dud receipe.
As I said the veg chili is always a winner, so much so when I first made it as the alternative to complement the meat one at my house party I had to make some more in the middle of my party!
