Granita, sorbet, fro-yo, ice-cream... Favourite recipes to make at home?

I bought an ice cream maker recently, and so far have made a blueberry fro-yo and a vanilla gelato, both enjoyable. I can see the machine might get a lot of use.

What should I make next? Bonus points for granita/sorbet recipes with an adult twist.

Dh made an excellent mojito sorbet.

Ben and Jerry’s have a recipe book. I bought it years ago when I bought my first ice cream machine and have used mainly their recipes since. The best thing is that their cream base doesn’t require you to make a cooked custard first. Off limits for pregnant women and anyone else who can’t eat raw egg but so easy to make.

@Forgottenmyphone Now that looks lush!

My family would devour @whippersnapper55 ’s recipe, but DH and I are salivating over the rhubarb and gin sorbet from @Forgottenmyphone

I came to suggest coffee: coffee granita, coffee gelato and plain old coffee ice cream. All different, all delicious. all excellent alone or with something cakey, crunchy or chocolatey. All improved by a slug of coffee liqueur.

Also an affogato with home churned ice cream.

I love freezing any kind of non-baked cheesecake mix (the kind that are mostly whipped cream and cream cheese, not gelatine). You can either just leave out the base and freeze the creamy cheesy goodness, or stir in the base towards the end of churning. An improvised recipe containing lots of strawberry puree and lime zest was a recent triumph!

poetryandwine · 08/07/2026 17:15

Your lime and strawberry concoction sounds delicious, @StrawberryPi . Would you tell us more?

StrawberryPi · 08/07/2026 17:27

Of course!

Basically it was most of a punnet of strawberries (some kept back for garnish) blended with the zest and juice of 2-3 limes.

Beat a tub of cream cheese with a couple of tablespoons of sugar. Stir in the strawberry mixture, and taste for sweetness - might need a bit more depending on how sweet the strawberries are. Whip a small tub of double cream to soft peaks and gently fold in. Taste again and add more sugar or lime as you see fit.

This can either be churned or frozen in a loaf/cake tin and sliced like a semifredo.

Let me know if you try and how you like it!

Thank you, @StrawberryPi . This sounds delicious. Sadly our summer house guest is intolerant to dairy, though he would otherwise love it. But he isn’t staying forever!

I’d recommend the Gelupo gelato book (and their Soho gelato place if you are London way!) for recipes

RedStripeLeaf · 10/07/2026 05:26

@PosiePerkinPootleFlump Soho's a bit of a trek for me, but I'll look that book out - thankyou.

@poetryandwine Coffee granita was an excellent call, thankyou. Just right for when my home 'office' is 35 degrees.

@poetryandwinei recently bought an ice cream maker and am still in the early stages of experimenting, but I have had success with a non-dairy ice cream for my vegan daughter.

It’s basically one carton of oat cream and one tub of Philadelphia vegan “cream cheese” with sugar and vanilla essence added then all whisked up and frozen. I think you could add any fruit to the basic mixture but my daughter prefers vanilla to fruity ice creams, so I don’t.

My ice cream maker has a setting which enables you to mix in stuff at the end, so I add in vegan chocolate chips.

Thank you, @Fifthtimelucky . We have missed making ice creams during the recent heat waves, though we have enjoyed experimenting with some nondairy sorbets. (The rhubarb and gin above is coming up soon.)

But we are all enthusiastic about @StrawberryPi ‘s concoction so this is def worth a try!

Seville Orange Marmalade Ice Cream – Demijohn - The Liquid Deli https://share.google/U72aT2Pfv6rGPcAlx

This is my favourite. You can make it with ordinary oranges and a lime when it's not Seville season.

Or coffee ice cream is my other favourite.
