DH is going on a 2 week work trip. We usually shop from Tesco.. same old stuff. I’m thinking I might treat myself to an Ocado delivery… so M&S stuff. What’s delicious? I’m justifying the additional cost as there will be no usual trips to pub or out for dinner. I’m planning on staying in and binging on Rivals and other crap I can’t watch when he’s home.

When DH was away, I'd have lobster, oysters, rib-eye steak etc.
I'd always get rid of the packaging before he came home.

TheGirlWhoLived · 31/05/2026 11:32

Definitely do a deli style night with lots of their dips and nice things to dip in!
Depends on how much cooking you like to do, I would have a cheese board night, steak baguette and frites, some of their yummy pizzas (maybe the pizza deal split over 2 weeks)

Get stuff you love but don't have often because he doesn't like it or can't eat it.

DH is a diabetic vegetarian so when he's away I have a meat and carbs fest.

molevalleyfanclub · 31/05/2026 11:36

I’m happy to do a bit of cooking as I do enjoy it. .. but not every night. I keep browsing the ‘Cook’ website but it just doesn’t seem like great value for bog standard home cooked food.

He’s a meat and carb monster. I’m probably going to try to do more veggie and fish stuff (though a steak will be great).

Well you need Pouilly Fume, Muscadet or Sancerre and a huge plate of smoked salmon if you're binging Rivals! And quails eggs and celery salt (Ocado don't do gulls eggs, sadly).

For me it would be big fat prawns, cooked in garlic, chilli, lemon and butter, I buy These which are lush. With a baguette and salad.

My other suggestions are
Steak with rocket salad and garlic butter
Blinis topped with crème fraiche, smoked salmon and dill
If you like salted caramel, these are amazing
If you want something quick but lovely lobster bisque is great
Chargrilled calamari rings are good with a squeeze of lime
These tuna steaks are gorgeous, cooked rare and then deglaze the pan with soy, honey and lime
Serve with Nigella's white bean mash - buy the best white beans they've got and organic unwaxed lemons

White Bean Mash

This is a garlicky, lemony, ultra-fabulous, utterly addictive bean mash. For US cup measures, use the toggle at the top of the ingredients list.

Ah, just saw your post about veggie and fish stuff.

Charlie Bigham's cottage pies for 1 are good.
I love a tray of roasted veg, although they do reduce a lot when cooking. I do red onions, carrots, red peppers, baby potatoes, garlic, herbs and olive oil.

I've also been roasting broccoli with olive oil and salt and I made a nice courgette salad the other day, just spirals of raw courgette with a dressing made of mixed up lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil, Dijon mustard and honey.

Mulledjuice · 31/05/2026 12:06

Chargrilled artichokes in olive oil.
The classic "nicer version of things you would have anyway" so bold bean co chickpeas, lovely bread + salads. Cut fruit.

Alllllll the strong, stinky cheese 🧀

karmakameleon · 31/05/2026 12:16

When DH is away I can’t usually be bothered to cook so do a lots of tomatoes on toast or avocado on toast. Their sourdough is good for this and they do an avocado dip which is basically mashed avocado with a bit of chilli and lime which is gorgeous.

I’d also get smoked salmon and cream cheese, salamis and a good selection of their deli items.

They do individual West Country yogurts which are delicious, so thick and creamy so I’d get a few of those. And some ice creams, I’m currently eating a lot of the mint ice cream bars which are so good but intend to work my way through the other flavours.

This all sounds amazing. The avocado dip someone mentioned sounds good too.

I’m also going to get some really delicious fruit. Maybe those massive strawberries I’ve seen in there.

Calabrian chilli marinaded mozzarella pearls

Homemade guacamole (the avocado dip a pp mentioned) is much nicer than read made versions - and very easy to make

Yeah I usually make my own guac. I’ll buy some really nice avos. On sourdough toast with feta.
