Why is it (almost) impossible to find good ice cream flavours in shops?

Lighthearted, please don't take this personally if you disagree - everyone loves what they love.
(It is also a little bit making me annoyed at myself for being annoyed by such a first-world problem.)

Ice cream. Very topical with our heatwave here in the UK. For the longest time the ice cream flavours in shops are making me feel like an old grump. But this year, with people raiding ice cream freezers in shops it is even worse. I am a very fruit-oriented guy. To me limes, lemons, grapefruits, cherries, etc are refreshing. You can even go crazy, and combine your lime with bits of mint, something that makes sense. Or combine cherries with chocolate, it is divine.

But why on god's green earth is the majority of ice cream stacked in the shops are random, overkill flavours? I am sorry, cookie dough is not a flavour. oreos, or whatever random brand of sweet is not a flavour. All my boring face is trying to do is spot a nice, simple flavour... like a passion fruit... When I reach for "lemon" I don't need it to be lemon cheesecake. Cheesecake is not a flavour. it is a dessert of its own. Are people really loving these nonsensical inventions? Why can't a flavour be clear, and not an "ice creamified" specific dessert/sweet?

And I am talking about actual, good ice cream here. Not the lemon sorbet that is 45 spoons of sugar with lemon essence.

Why do I always find proper and clean flavours in the most remote farm shops if I want to buy some? The reign of silly ice cream flavours needs to end...

(oh, and a little personal addition that will make me unpopular: vanilla can die a painful death, too. It was already boring even when I was a kid. There is a reason we say "he/she's a bit vanilla". And yet vanilla is the flavour that you have stacks and stacks of from all brands.. )

Yes, I know we can make our own. And yes, I know some cafes have wonderful handcrafted ice cream.. I specifically aimed at shops.

My local gelateria does fig and mascarpone and a ginger and honey one. Both amazing

Are you in West Yorkshire? The one up the road sells those flavours, as well as rhubarb, and elderflower when it's in season. They are delicious.

Do you live in Morecambe I had a fig and mascarpone ice cream from a shop there. It was one of the best ice creams I’ve had.

Mackies do a great sour cherry that is only available in their cafe in Aberdeen - 37 flavours!!!

Remo Blackcurrant sorbet. It’s actually an ice lolly but it’s just sorbet on a stick and it’s delicious. From Waitrose.

I feel your pain, I love a fruity ice cream too. Raspberry ripple seems to have mostly disappeared which is a shame.

I loved rum and raisin when I was a child, yet virtually no shops sell it now, and the ones that I've found that do; it just doesn't taste the same. I went to one ice cream parlour that sold it but even then, was okay but nothing like it used to be.

That being said, I do have an unhealthy addiction to the Mackie's ice cream. It's not quite vanilla, just plain. I mix in a Flake or some other chocolate with it, or just have it on a cone with the works (and again, a flake, of course).

I'm with you OP. I think salted caramel ice cream is an abomination. Cookie dough is sickly.

Make your own would be my advice. It's quick and easy once you get the hang of it.

Can you make ice cream without a machine?

Waitrose stock Ottolenghi brand Pistachio with Sour Cherry. It is the dessert of the gods.

That sounds nice.

Yes I’ve thought this for ages! I’d love to be able to buy good quality ice cream flavours in banana, mint chocolate chip, coffee, strawberry etc. I don’t like the chunky mixtures of vanilla with some chocolate product.

Funnily I’ve just been to an ice cream place that had raspberry ripple (the post above you) and rum and raisin!

I love chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. But that aside, I agree with you. Everything is so claggy these days. Our caramel, is always salted. Our lemon, it must be cheesecaked.

I'm the same with perfume actually. Singular, crisp, strident and clean please. Stop making everything so everythingy.

DKNY woman is a gorgeous crisp one, and Bobbi brown beach

Omg jealous 😱 and in awe 😍 they all look like heaven right now I'm ngl. I had to travel 4 miles to get to the parlour that sold the good rum & raisin 🥲 and I love raspberry ripple too! Though I think the shop should face closure due to selling cola ice cream because wtf
