For 8 people - 50% vegetarian, so for ease I'd rather keep it all veggie if possible. Some people quite adventurous with their food, others are a bit picky so need some relatively plain options. I have a habit of doing too much and ending up not enjoying the party, so I'd like to try and avoid that if possible - would rather go with larger quantities of a few nice things, or add in shop bought, rather than lots of different things from scratch. There will also be lots of alcohol so do need something that will fill people up rather than just light nibbles. This is the current plan...

Buffalo cauliflower wings
BBQ "ribs" (roasted king oyster mushroom)
"Meatball" sliders (veggie meatball, marinara sauce, cheese on garlic baked rolls)
Feta, corn and tortilla salad (includes peppers, onions, tomatoes etc.)
Veggie slaw
Potato salad (creamy yoghurt/mayo dressing, includes hard boiled eggs)
Choc chip cookies (home made)

Ice cream to make ice cream sandwiches with the home made cookies?

Nachos to start with/nibble with beers?

Sounds delicious- can I come? Agree the ice cream sandwiches is a really nice idea.

murasaki · 28/05/2026 16:22

A couple of pizzas? One margarita, one mushroom, peppers etc.

hallenbad · 28/05/2026 16:24

Looks delicious. I would make it a more piquant/Vinaigrette slaw not a traditional Mayo drenched one so as to contrast with the potato salad, tis all.

Yeah, I think that's a good point (especially for me, as I don't even really like potato salad). I found a BBC recipe for a new york deli style one, which has a mustard/oil base, and some pickles running through, which might be nice

Pizzas is a great idea and would please everyone. My only worry is oven space (I have an annoyingly small oven). I think I'll keep a few in the freezer, then I can pop them in quickly to bring out if people are ploughing through everything else

Sounds very nice indeed. I am still recovering from the last Spain v England match when I (inadvertently) made paella for tea. Teenage son was outraged and kept saying, 'OMG, seriously?? Seriously? Have you done that on purpose? You expect me to eat SPANISH food???'

There was dramatic flamenco type flouncing...

Your menu looks great, but I can see why you say:

As what you've listed looks like a lot of work. Perhaps ditch the sliders and just have the (nice, ready made) pizza as your bready thing? Also lose the feta, corn and tortilla salad as you've a few other salads/veg nibbles.

Or will someone else be helping with prep?

"Or will someone else be helping with prep"....categorically no lol. They'll likely be faffing around doing something completely pointless and unrelated like trying to move a telly from one perfectly good spot to another 😂

Thank you for the inspiration to make things special for the matches, I hadn’t thought of that!

Bunnyofhope · 28/05/2026 21:28

Yup it's a rule here that you have to eat something, however bizarre from what ever two countries (or more!) that you will be watching that day.
