Short ribs disaster.

Hi all, is there any way this can be saved? After seeing many recipes online, I wanted to try short ribs. Managed to get some ‘Tesco finest’ for £28 (!!) would never normally spend this on meat, but long story short, it’s a special occasion.

on opening, I noticed they seemed all fat, couldn’t see any meat on the damn things at all, but tried to trust the process. Did all the browning etc and then into the liquid, low and slow. Well it’s been 4 hours now and it’s just essentially all clumps of white fat and barely any meat. I can’t believe it.

have I done anything wrong? Do I leave it longer? Or is it basically £30 and all day cooking down the drain?

thanks!!

The fat lumps don't sound normal- at lest compared to the ones I've bought in the past.

I will say that I have had tough ribs, and discovered the last time I did them that I had to cook them for nearly twice the amount of time recommended. They did come out very tender then, so maybe give them another couple of hours?

I'd take them back to the shop to be honest. I've never refunded a food item in my life but for £28 it's unacceptable.

Try the butchers next time, the prices are barely and different these days and the quality isn't even comparable.

Return then

They probably need a lot longer. Do you have a slow cooker you could transfer them to, splash of wine and just leave for ages? They don't sound great in themselves and I'd complain though, they shouldn't be that fatty.

IME the Waitrose ones are much cheaper and generally fine but they do take a bit of cooking.

Thanks all. Painstakingly separated the meat from fat and it was a pitiful amount. The meat was absolutely delicious so the cooking was fine, but the ribs were clearly awful. So I’m here to say that I would avoid the Tesco short ribs at all costs!

Tesco customer services are usually very good. Did you take a photo? I bet if you explained what you said here, they'd give you a refund.

I agree , Tesco customer service is really good. You'll need the receipt unless you have a clubcard which the can use to check the purchase. Tweet them.

@Earwigoagain thanks, I’ll try it. I did take a photo. Perhaps I’ll end them an email. Even ChatGPT said it was an incredibly bad cut 🤣
