Best chocolate cake recipe

I need to bake a really nice, relatively simple fail safe chocolate cake for my sister’s birthday. I’m a regular baker but she doesn’t want anything too faffy and it needs to be able to be covered in fondant as she wants specific decorations on it. So what’s the best chocolate sponge cake you’ve ever made?

Far and away the best chocolate cake there is. Even better if you leave it a day or two. I have hardly ever used a different recipe since being introduced to this one. (I don't particularly like beer. But I live the more complex flavour the stout gives in this cake.) I usually double it and make and ice two, so that I can use a bottle of stout without waste, then freeze the second after a day. It freezes very well.

For a chocolate cake for dessert, I like Pierre Herme's Gateau Suzy, which is also very easy.

Discovered it a few years ago and I make it for every birthday! Works with ganache, peanut butter icing, cream cheese icing, and very well with fondant as it's not too sweet, and the richness of it cuts through the fondant.

Tesco chocolate fudge cake recipe is amazing, super light and dead easy to make.
