Serious question- Just wondered what you use - I have never bought a mandolin as I’m sure i would get carried away and end up slicing y finger ….

This is quite odd. I was dreaming of dauphinouise all day and made them for tea. Sadly very disappointing. I must have lost my knack. Almost like mash 😥

FiveTwoFaster · 12/04/2026 22:29

Used to be a mandolin til I had to do it for a big roast, when I was so hungover I thought I was going to have to call myself an ambulance.
magimix ever since. A life changer. You need the dauphinois to cure it. So as long as you have the dishwasher and 90 seconds to slice all your unpeeled Maris pipers on a Sunday…

Careful Sinuous, someone will be coming on to correct your spelling 😂

Actually I think the correct spelling is Dauphinois — no ‘e’ — as the word gratin is masculine .
Le gratin Dauphinois.
(I wouldn’t have bothered tp comment except this spelling correction is itself wrong. )

Ooh, can I join in?

A mandolin is a musical instrument. Not all that much use for slicing potatoes.😂

Un couteau.

cupfinalchaos · 13/04/2026 22:42

Food processor slicing attachment.. too much for a mandolin.

I wear a metallic type mesh glove that stops me slicing my fingers when I mandolin stuff.

Same here, after one too many incidents requiring a plaster.

ExOptimist · 13/04/2026 22:46

Food processor with thin slicer blade, takes seconds.

minipie · 13/04/2026 23:04

Mandolin

Admittedly there have been some near misses on the sliced finger front

You might try this: https://www.qvcuk.com/cooks-essentials-speed-grater-%26-slicer-suction-base.product.818803.html?sc=entry I'm very pleased with mine, and it has a slicing as well as grating blades.

EdinaTheConfessor · 02/07/2026 20:48

My mandolin has a handle type thing with spikes to hold the potato so no fingers anywhere near the blade. Let me see if I can find a link, although I have had it for decades so probably not

It’s this one but I don’t think I’ve ever used the shredding attachment things.

The mesh gloves are wonderful - I never handle the mandolin unless I'm wearing them.
