Never made this…. What sauces do you use? Tomato or just cheese or both?

And do you like tuna fish pie with mushrooms? Also what’s the best tuna to get? Used to get a posh fair trade one in Waitrose but it’s gone now.

I’m not a fan of white, creamy or cheesy sauces so I use a tomato base. There’s no recipe as such I cook pasta farfalle or conchiglie) make a sauce with chopped tomatoes, red onion, garlic, oregano and basil, splash of balsamic. Add chopped peppers, sweetcorn and tuna. mix it all together and put in oven dish. Top with mix of cheddar, mozzarella and breadcrumbs and bake.

I don't have it anymore as none of the rest of the family like it, but as a student would regularly make 'tuna slop' - tin of Campbell's condensed mushroom soup, tin of chopped tomatoes, large tin of tuna and tin of sweetcorn, all mixed together and heated through then stir in cooked pasta (about 4 people's worth). If not ravenous, top with cheese and grill until browned.

I made this one last night for a change. Went down really well.
of course dd and ds2 picked out the sun-dried tomatoes and gave them to me and ds1.
i can’t possibly cook a recipe where everybody likes every ingredient 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

I do a cheese sauce base and mix in a tin of chopped tomatoes

I make the same tomato sauce as I use for pasta (olive oil, red onion, tinned tomatoes, tomato purée, something to counteract the acidity such as ketchup or sugar, herbs and seasoning.) I make a white sauce with mustard and some cheese in it (not cheesy enough to be a cheese sauce!) Tuna, cooked pasta and tomato sauce into a casserole dish, then white sauce on top with another handful of cheese. It’s loosely based on a shop bought one DP used to like, so I copied it and we all have it.

Edited to say that I stick it in the oven for 15 or 20 minutes.

I do two versions, one with cheese sauce and a tomato one…(I also do a delicious cheese one with smoked haddock/basa, similar to the tuna cheese one but without breadcrumbs and pop under grill for 5-10 mins instead of oven)…

Cheese sauce: make a roux and add tuna, about 6oz grated cheddar, and a handful of frozen mixed veg/frozen sweet corn. Cook pasta. Put in dish, cover with more cheese and breadcrumbs, bake at 180 for 20 mins.

Tomato sauce: fry onion and garlic, add tuna, tinned toms and a tin of ratatouille, splash of Worcester sauce, oregano/basil, simmer while pasta cooks. Just before putting in dish, add a handful of grated cheddar. Put in dish, sprinkle more grated cheese on top, bake 180 for 15 mins or until browned. 9-yo DD loves this - especially with farfalle pasta.

Forgot to say, I just use any old tins of tuna, usually from Sainsbury’s or Lidl (not the super cheap ones though) but I prefer tuna in spring water to oil or brine.

Yeah that’s the one I use spring water. Bloody Waitrose getting rid of the nice eco friendly one forget its name. I didn’t mind paying more for it either.
