I am doing the canape course for an end of school year class party this weekend - I know quite a few and have done most of the stock ones in my time - however I love experimenting and they are a friendly bunch so I would greatly welcome your most original favourite Many Thanks

crab, advocado and mayo, with a little chilli and lemon, served in the inner leaves of little gem lettuce

My favourite from the 2 michelin starred restaurant round the corner is salt and vinegar crisps, but thye do them as hand cut/cooked potato crisps, sprinkled with a little salt and served with a pot of balsamic vinegar cream

i had some lovely smoked salmon and horseradish creme fraiche recently on a blini, not that original but they got the mix just right

How about those mad quails egg scottish eggs from Waitrose?

I'm dead dull with canapes (and I fear slightly retro but not in a good way) - mini vol au vents (got to be tiny, big ones are a bit too 70's, even for me!) with creamed mushrooms, prawns in mayo with lime or egg mayo. Also little mini kebabs of cherry toms and cubes of feta smeared with pesto to 'glue' them together.

creme fraich with horseradich & honey - on a crostini with smoked salmon on top - yum!

not original at all, but some of my favourites...

dates stuffed with marzipan

teaspoons laid out with a mouthful of salmon mousse (and their might have been a sliver of crunchy lettuce or something).

tiny cheese & chive scones with cream cheese & smoked salmon

nachos loaded up with mouthful of chilli, guacamole & soured cream.

any breadstick/cracker/crisp with dips!!

I like mini yorkshire puddings with a bit of rare roast beef and horseradish flavoured creme fraiche. (Delia has a good recipe for these, I think, and some other good canapes in one of those white "How to Cook" books.)

I love mini Caeser Salad/Prawn Cocktails served in shot glasses. Yum!

Little sausages with sticky onion relish on sticks

Tiny pavolovas with a dollop of creama nd a raspberry popped on top.

Went to a fab wedding with retro canapes - with a twist.
Potatoes covered in tin foil and pineapple and cheese on sticks - only some had mango, blueberries, cranberries etc and different cheeses to suit the diff fruit - very pretty and lots of fun.
Prawn cocktail bites - in little crisp gem lettuce shells and plenty of lime and ginger to spice them up
Sausage rolls - with hints of spices and fruit in the sausage mix.
Vol au vents - again with updated fillings like crab and wasabi
Mini hot dogs and mini yorkshires were there too.

Personally if doing canape style things for people coming round I keep it as informal as posisble and do lots of tapas style things. Mainly as we always have olives, toms, ciabatta etc lying around!

Might seem a bit old hat, I still think a some skinny chips in a cone of white/news paper looks very cute-can add a breaded scampi too. With ketchup/tartare to dip.

Ikea's Croustades (?) £2 per pack I think. Fill with home-made pate (piped in, with a sprig of parsley or something green on top)

Marmite and cheese pinwheels - roll out puff pastry into long rectangle, smear with marmite, add grated cheddar, roll and cut. Bake till ready (10-15 mins?) (then reheat to serve). Tacky but delicious!
