Pickled egg help

NorthEastFartHead · 08/03/2026 20:19

I want to pickle some eggs for DH. I've never pickled anything before and have no idea what I'm doing.

I've found a few recipes online (this one looks nice - https://elkeliving.com/2022/03/10/jalapeno-pickled-eggs-with-garlic/?amp=1#recipe)

But do I need go add "pickling spice" to it, or any/every pickled egg recipe?
Another recipe somewhere said pickling spice was essential to any pickled egg recipe.

Any help very welcome! Thanks!

Why?

NorthEastFartHead · 08/03/2026 20:31

Why what? 🤣

I don't understand what you're asking me "why" about, like what bit of my post your question is in response to.

I have no idea OP but I’d be delighted with a jar of pickled eggs 🥚

I wasnt being funny, I realise it sounded like that!

I wondered why you were pickling eggs, is it because he has had home pickled eggs before and they're different to shop bought?

Ive only ever had shop bought ones and they're horrible so I assume you know he likes them or are you going on wing and giving him something experimental? I love experimental.

Oh no, I know you weren't being funny! I just didn't know how to answer 😂

He really likes pickled eggs but has only had shop bought. I want to make some myself as a treat (hopefully) for him.

The pickling spice adds flavour to the vinegar. You can buy jars of Sarsons pickling vinegar so you just heat and add to whatever you are pickling.

You can also buy packs of pickling spice ready mixed, that you just add to your vinegar when heating.

I make pickles every Christmas and make without pickle spice as my father can’t tolerate any chilli/heat. You can absolutely make them without but depends on if you want a bit more flavour or not.

Pickling spice is just any mix you like of mustard seed, peppercorns, dried chillies, coriander seed etc. They will help flavour the eggs but you can pickle eggs without them.

Homemade are far superior to shop bought!

We just buy the Sarsons pickling vinegar, prick each egg with a cocktail stick once, pop them in while they’re still warm.
