What would you put with chicken breast to give it flavour

I'm trying to lose weight, and one thing I want to do is chicken breast wrapped in foil in my air fryer. What can I put in with the chicken breast to give it some flavour, but not too many extra calories? Would lemon juice work?

You could use lemon but I'd mix with some garlic, and some herb like oregano or thyme and some salt and black pepper.

Paprika or chilli would also work for you, mustard, hot sauce, soy sauce, balsamic - none of them would be much in terms of calories.

I quite like slitting them in half and adding some pesto (or philadelphia with herbs and garlic).

Batchlady hassleback chicken works if you subsitute the mozzarella for sliced red onion too https://thebatchlady.com/recipe/mozzarella-and-tomato-hasselback-chicken/

Smoked paprika; it makes everything better!

onelumporthree · 25/02/2026 13:18

Yes, lemon juice works.

Or baste with a little red pesto or barbecue sauce, you won't need a lot, and add some dried mixed herbs & black pepper on top, then seal in the parcel.

If you want flavour you’d be far better off with chicken thighs, trimming them before cooking and spooning off any fat that is rendered during cooking.
Yes, they might still have a slightly higher calorie content but they will also have far more flavour and moisture than dry and tasteless breasts, which are often overcooked too.
If you have to have breast, then at least leave it on the bone.

Lemon and herbs
yoghurt and curry spices
Cajun mix
tex mex mix

Just sprinkle it over and fry

Smoked paprika; it makes everything better!

Going to take your smoked paprika and raise you by adding oregano and salt. Grin

Add some garlic paste as well and you are half way to kfc in terms of flavour, if not calories.

We’ve got some Middle Eastern seasoning at the moment which is nice or sometimes put peri peri which is a bit more spicy.

FartSock5000 · 25/02/2026 14:33

Knorr Aromat - it the the ultimate season all.
Then squeeze a wee bit of lemon juice.

You can also add a small amount of chicken stock which will help 'steam' the chicken and keep it juicy.

You can't go wrong with herbs and spices. Great way to flavour up your meat without adding a ton of calories and sat fats.

SparklyGlitterballs · 25/02/2026 14:37

We sprinkle with oregano and paprika and mix it about to ensure it's all covered. Really tasty.

Crumble a veg stock cube and mix with a drop of olive oil and rub into the chicken breast, cover in foil and whack in air fryer

OriginalUsername2 · 25/02/2026 14:50

You could use the Maggi chicken seasonings. You won’t need a whole packet. Loads of flavours! Then you can start mixing your own herb mixes when you know what you like.

HopefulYankee · 25/02/2026 14:52

You could slice the chicken breasts into strips and marinate them in fat free yogurt, red sliced red onions and Lebanese 5 spice for a shawarma style chicken.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 25/02/2026 14:53

Cajun spice mix is my go to. I love it on salmon too.

Any of these!

Pennyfan · 25/02/2026 15:37

A tablespoon each of Worcester sauce, paprika, whole grain mustard and honey, mixed together for a marinade-beat the chicken until uniform thickness. After half hour, fry chicken and when cooked, add bit of cream to pan and heat up.

Pennyfan · 25/02/2026 15:38

Oh sorry, just noticed air fryer-just do marinade and forget cream.

TheFormidableMrsC · 25/02/2026 16:26

Aldi chicken seasoning is lovely. I also sometime use a little grated Parmesan. There are loads of spice mixes available to try, peri, chilli, you could make your own marinades. Greek yoghurt also makes a good base for creamy marinades and adds extra protein.

Wrapped in Serrano ham - or Parma ham. V tasty & just a few extra calories.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 25/02/2026 16:43

Tarragon

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/02/2026 16:45

Any herbs.

Not sure if this would work in an air fryer but you could slit it down middle put Philadelphia light inside then cover in breadcrumbs. Chicken Kiev.

Jellybean23 · 25/02/2026 16:45

A rasher of back bacon. Flatten the rasher to make it thinner and bigger, wrap it around the chicken and hold in place with a couple of wooden cocktail sticks. Bake in the air fryer (NOT in foil) on a shelf or grid.

Theonlywayicanloveyou · 25/02/2026 16:50

Lemon, garlic and herbs.
Sliced oranges.
teriyaki sauce or soy sauce.
