Does anyone have a tried and tested recipe for bara brith, Welsh tea bread please? I don't really bake but I fancy having a try at making this. Plus, it's yum!

Given to me by a patient and I’ve made it a few times!

6oz currants
6oz sultanas
8oz light muscovado sugar (or dark would do)
10 fl oz strong hot tea
10oz self raising flour
1 beaten egg

Measure fruit and sugar into bowl and pour hot tea over, cover and leave overnight.
Preheat oven 150C. Line 2lb loaf tin.
Stir flour and egg into the fruit mixture (here possibly add some cinnamon or other spices). Mix thoroughly and turn into prepared tin.
Bake for 1hr - 1hr 15. (covering after 45 mins with greaseproof or brown paper).
Test with a skewer, if it comes out clean it is ready. Cool in the tin.
Keeps well and will freeze.

I made some recently following the same recipe as the Visit Wales one. It was really good but I second their comment about spreading the slice with salted butter before eating - it makes all the difference.

This is the visit Wales one I made yesterday spread with salted butter whilst still warm because I couldn’t wait. Delicious!

Soaking the fruit overnight makes all the difference

I’ve sorted out the baking supplies this week so it’s much easier to find thibgs and it’s given me a new enthusiasm for baking.

I’m definitely going to try the Visit Wales recipe this week. I bloody love Bara Brith!

Definitely no fat in the baking, just lovely butter on each slice!

DP used to make this using a Hairy Bikers recipe. I think I need to remind him to make it again. It definitely needs to be spread with salted butter - delicious!

Tgis has to be a stealth brag surely? You have a DH and he bakes you Bara Brith. Sone girls can only dream…Grin

Yum. Reminds me of my lovely nan who used to bake it for me (and wrap it really well in greaseproof and foil) to take back to uni. I was a bit unappreciative of her efforts and would chuck it in the cupboard and be so happy when I found it a month or so later.

Lol
He’s really not a cook at all, but this is one of the few hits in his repertoire. Banana bread is another.
