Have I ruined my cake?

It’s my baby’s 1st birthday tomorrow and we have family coming round for a small party. I’ve baked a carrot cake which took bloody ages to make. Then, when I was icing it with cream cheese, in my sleep deprived state I realised I had mixed up my spoons and was spooning on the icing with a spoon I had licked (once).

I know obviously that’s a massive no no in an ideal world, but does it mean I’ve ruined my cake? What would you do? Throw it or keep quiet?! I don’t have time to make another one😭

Are you sick? If not, I think it's fine.

OchreSnail · 03/02/2026 18:07

Because you licked the spoon?

I mean, unless you're Typhoid Mary, probably not!

HDready · 03/02/2026 18:08

Absolutely fine. Enjoy your cake and the party!

CurlewKate · 03/02/2026 18:09

Absolutely fine. Who among us…….🤣

Wait until you hear what the 5 Second Rule lets you do!

We won't tell anyone.

Ssshhhhh

SargeMarge · 03/02/2026 18:27

You’ve made cream cheese icing, right? Not just cream cheese?

And also, who cares about a licked spoon. It’s family. Would you seriously throw that cake out? Insane.

EdinaTheConfessor · 03/02/2026 18:28

What do you think would happen if someone ate the cake made with a spoon you once licked? Really?

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 03/02/2026 18:28

I wouldn’t care. Somebody will be blowing all over it to blow out a candle.

GaelsBlue · 03/02/2026 18:29

Have you ever watched a chef or baker at work? Probably best not to...

FuriousInventions · 03/02/2026 18:29

If you’re baking for family and you’ve not got any awful contagious diseases, it’s fine.
Wait until she starts baking with you and there’s fingers/snot/dribble/toys going into the mix 🤣 or worse still, when they bake at nursery and she proudly hands you a cupcake or biscuit that’s full of other kids’ snot/dribble too.
Enjoy your lovely carrot cake and I hope she has a good birthday 😊

Ok thanks everyone for your (mostly) kind answers 😅 the cake has been saved 🙏🏻

With both of my kids I have suffered a bit with pp anxiety and it mostly seems to manifest as fears around food hygiene and the worry I will make them sick. I’ve tried to keep in check over the years, but sometimes I lose the ability to tell what is a legitimate concern and what is my mind spiralling a bit out of control 😬
