Hi. A friend has invited me to a Burns night dinner. What would you take? Whisky a bit expensive but maybe could stretch to it. Wine? Food contribution? Something Scottish?

OP posts:

Short bread
cheese & oatcakes
flowers
wine
tunnocks teacakes?!

I wouldn’t expect something specifically Scottish …..

JSMill · 20/01/2026 20:23

@ChocoChocoLatte are you Scottish?

FinallyHere · 20/01/2026 20:43

Get some tablet. Like fidget but better

always goes down a storm.

sprigatito · 20/01/2026 20:44

I’d make some shortbread and tablet if I couldn’t run to a decent bottle of whiskey.

EvangelineTheNightStar · 20/01/2026 20:45

Irn Bru or red kola!

Arlanymor · 20/01/2026 20:46

Tablet and Balvenie 12.

Alltheyellowbirds · 20/01/2026 20:47

Make a batch of tablet. Cheap, easy, Scottish, and always nice to receive something home-made.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 20/01/2026 20:50

I'm Scottish. Decline the invitation, haggis is minging. Thank me later.

I’m Scottish. Haggis is great. You should go!

Take peppercorn sauce! I love peppercorn sauce on my haggis 😆.

But why not take some dessert? Or are they doing that? If they’re doing dessert so don’t want you to bring it then just take wine. You don’t only drink whisky with dinner! Wine is good.

Never take whiskey for god’s sake.

Whisky - yes. Whiskey - no.

But people drink wine too. And as ppm said Irn Bru is a fun thing to take.

chattyness · 20/01/2026 21:02

Definitely tablet and pineapple tarts

justasking111 · 20/01/2026 21:04

I'd take wine and flowers.

I love haggis, everyone in our house does. We eat it as a Sunday brunch dish rather than neeps and tatties though.

BadgernTheGarden · 20/01/2026 21:12

My DH gets allergic reaction to haggis I think it's the sulphites they use as preservatives. I make a minced lamb loaf with the right herbs, spices oatmeal and of course whisky for haggis as an acceptable alternative. With mashed carrot and swede and tatties.

readingmakesmehappy · 20/01/2026 21:13

Tablet flavoured popcorn. Look it up online, it’s delicious.

JSMill · 20/01/2026 21:17

I’m Scottish. I love haggis. I would bring some wine and flowers, just like I would to any other dinner invitation. I certainly wouldn’t be bringing Tunnocks teacakes.

Ineffable23 · 20/01/2026 21:19

If they've not asked you to contribute anything to dinner, I would probably take wine, and maybe some tablet if you wanted to - the host can either serve it as petit fours or keep it and eat at their leisure.

Teajenny7 · 20/01/2026 22:58

I made tablet to for our Burns Supper and the one we are invited to the following night. Opps we have scoffed the lot!
Just take what you would to any dinner party.

Arran2024 · 20/01/2026 23:05

I just bought my haggis today for Sunday. Very much looking forward to it. I hope you like it - it's lovely.

You can bring anything Scottish themed, or just some wine, flowers etc. Host will have everything sorted, I guess. You could always bring some Scottish honey - you can order it online.

WearyAuldWumman · 20/01/2026 23:06

Nothing wrong with a bottle of wine. That would be very acceptable.

ChocoChocoLatte · 20/01/2026 23:06

@JSMillborn & bred

😂

It depends on the haggis, to be fair.

One time I went into a cafeteria type restaurant in Princes St. I didn't see much that I fancied, so I opted for the haggis. The chef/server hissed "I wouldn't - it's just for the tourists!"

ChocoChocoLatte · 20/01/2026 23:09

@WearyAuldWummanlol

he has a point, some are much better than others…….

ChocoChocoLatte · 20/01/2026 23:09

@JSMill what’s wrong with a box of tunnocks teacakes?

Absolutely nothing, I'd be fair chuffed if someone bought them in here and snowballs 😋
