I've got a horrible christmas cake from marks and spencer. What can I do with it?

If I started chucking brandy at it every day for 2 weeks, would that just be a waste of brandy or would it improve it? Currently it's sickly sweet and revolting.

Wondering if there's a dessert I can do with it (not icecream)

Any ideas?

Throw it in the bin?

Mulledjuice · 16/01/2026 17:40

I can't imagine brandy would improve it if it is already sickly.

Can you mix it into something else like yoghurt or a v plain sponge?
Or have a piece of it with cheddar cheese and celery?
Or use it as a door stop?

Make a sort of bread/cake pudding? Add spices, an egg, some milk, mix well and bake it. Obvs no need to add sugar.
Or slice it, slightly butter the slices and layer them, then pour over some milk beaten up with an egg or two. Bake in the oven until set.

Nigella’s Christmas Puddini Bonbons. No need to make them look like Christmas puddings, but the mixture would be divine with just a plain white chocolate cap. I’ve made them with both leftover Christmas pudding and Christmas cake and they work both ways!

Christmas Puddini Bonbons

These are delectable little bonbons made by mixing up cooked and cooled Christmas pudding (see Additional Information below), liquor, syrup and melted chocolate, rolling them into small balls, then dripping melted white chocolate on them and arranging...

Give it to the birds lol

Wonderknicks · 16/01/2026 17:47

Mix it with some vanilla ice cream to make Christmas cake ice cream?

SilenceInside · 16/01/2026 17:50

I would crumble it up and use it where you might otherwise use dried fruit. So add to bread and butter pudding, or even something like an Eccles cake, or similar.

soupyspoon · 16/01/2026 17:50

Cut it up into portions and use some of those portions mixed with bread to make a bread pudding the fruit and spices and sugar that are already in the cake means you wont need to add more and it wont be too sweet overall.

Eat it with strong cheese like up north, the sweetness contrasts with the salty cheese, lovely.

hahagogomomo · 16/01/2026 17:56

With Wensleydale cheese, try it!

Someone I know used to use fruit cake instead of sponge cake in trifles.

Not sure I'd totally recommend it, but it might be worth a go...

Donate it to the poor. They’ll eat anything if they are hungry enough 🤷‍♀️

Throw it in the bin?

I mean this. Just bin it.

soupyspoon · 16/01/2026 17:59

I cant abide of the thought of binning food unless its off.

You can always reuse stuff in other dishes.

Theres a COL crisis and people dont know how to repurpose dishes.

Drink the brandy and bin the cake. Life's too short

I hope that's a joke

7238SM · 16/01/2026 18:03

I've make these with Christmas cake and/or pudding. I don't use cranberries, but sultanas instead.
Rum balls

If I was anywhere near you, I'd take it off your hands. Never met a fruit cake I didn't like, especially from M&S.

soupyspoon · 16/01/2026 18:11

I mean iced fruit cake wont go off until you open it and even then it wont go 'off' it will just dry out a bit. And I would freeze the portions so you just use what you want over time.

TheatreTheatre · 16/01/2026 18:15

Drink the brandy
Put cake out for birds.

WiltedLettuce · 16/01/2026 18:26

Cut it in half and use it as bookends.

AnnasFangs · 16/01/2026 18:30

As pp suggested, trifle?
