Ideas for using chutney as a side, not an ingredient

OMGitsnotgood · 14/01/2026 19:57

We were gifted a hamper of a variety of homemade chutneys for Christmas. We love chutney and knowing this friend, all will be very tasty.
We usually have chutney with cheeses or in a cheese or ham sandwich. But we are trying to cut down on cheese, and DH not so keen on ham
or gammon.
I want to be able to taste the chutney, hence the’uaing as a side rather than as an ingredient’ in the OP. I’d have a spoonful with quiche and salad for example.
Any other thoughts please?

Really nice with bubble and squeak

Blarn · 14/01/2026 19:59

I like chutney next to eggy bread.

Lisanne55 · 14/01/2026 20:01

I have it on cheese on toast, on a jacket potato with cheese, with quiche, with crackers.

Thank you - bubble and squeak and eggy bread are exactly the kind of suggestions I am looking for and sound lovely.

I like it with a baked potato and cold leftover roast of any kind.

It’s what my family does on Boxing Day with the Christmas Day leftovers.

Also really good with pork pie.

I'd eat it on salad but you could try:

Grilled meats: Chutney adds a flavorful twist to grilled chicken, lamb, or fish.

Cheese: Serve chutney over cream cheese with crackers for a delicious appetizer.

Side dishes: Pair chutney with biryani, rice dishes, or salads to enhance their taste.

Snacks: Use chutney as a dip for samosas, pakoras, or chips.

With chicken or pork, lovely

DollopOfFun · 14/01/2026 20:03

I dollop it over roasted veg (ie squash and peppers), scattered with spinach leaves and crumbled feta.

It works so well with cheese doesn’t it but am really trying to cut down on cheese, which probably isn’t going to happen so will bear these in mind ! Thank you

Oh gosh so many suggestions while I was replying to the first posters. Thank you so much, my head was just stuck on cheese and I couldn’t think any broader! Great ideas thank you

As a glaze for duck

drspouse · 14/01/2026 20:06

If you really have loads you can blend it to make an unusual ketchup.
I like chutney with sausages, also!

CharlieSays13 · 14/01/2026 20:06

Nice with pate and crackers or oatcakes

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 14/01/2026 20:08

With baked bean toasties/on toast/jacket potatoes.

I had some with my cooked breakfast on Saturday, very good with sausages and bacon. In sandwiches with cold meats, leftover roast chicken or beef.

UpMyself · 14/01/2026 20:11

You could eat it with anything savoury in the way some people eat tomato ketchup with everything.

WittyJadeStork · 14/01/2026 20:13

With pate on toast
in a toasty
with pork pie
as part of a ploughman’s lunch

Ilovemyshed · 14/01/2026 20:16

You can blitz it in a blender and use as a glaze for chicken.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/01/2026 13:27

These are both cheesy ones, but both good ones-
use it in a quiche instead of caramelised onions

spread on uncooked crumpets, top with cheese and cook in the air fryer

As an ingredient but able to taste it:
put a dollop of chutney with the sausage in homemade sausage rolls

bumphousebump · 15/01/2026 13:30

In a BLT... espcially if it's a tomato-ey chutney.
With sausages.
With roast med type veg....

Coffeeishot · 15/01/2026 13:32

I like chutneys with sausages and mash. I have an onion chutney on the go and i put a heat through and had it with sausages last night, you can have churtney as a side for a lot .
