I’m looking for somewhere to celebrate a big birthday, I want a decent quality afternoon tea in a nice setting for a group of about 12-15. Any recommendations gratefully received!

I’d go to Ashdown Park or Alexander House.

@Thewalrusandthecarpenter Have you had afternoon tea at either? I know all the posh hotels but want a solid this was really good recommendation. 🙂

South Lodge Ockenden manor are both nice too

letshavetea · 07/01/2026 16:48

I would go to the star in Alfriston.

@HHCrochetDiva yes I have, both places and Ashdown Park numerous times but not, I confess, in the last few years. I personally think it’s the nicer of the two with the ambience, inside and outside surroundings, good service but I’m sure that there will be experiences to the contrary (there always are).

Amberley Castle was fabulous a few years ago.

gingerperil · 07/01/2026 16:51

South Lodge was nice but Amberley castle was nicest if you can travel..

HHCrochetDiva · 07/01/2026 17:09

Oh I forget about Amberley Castle, considering hiring a mini bus so no one has to drive too far!

The Spread Eagle in Midhurst?

I hated Amberley Castle! The sandwiches were dry and the cakes underwhelming. Not great service either. Wouldn't go back - sorry.

lechatnoir · 07/01/2026 17:55

We went to Ashdown Park for my mum‘s birthday last year and I found it all a bit dreary I’m afraid - didn’t feel like it had changed since we went to a wedding there 25 years ago! Also been to South lodge and the setting and service we’re both excellent, but the actual tea itself a bit disappointing as they We’re clearly trying to do things a bit differently and some of these sandwich choices were very odd

Amberley Castle. You won't beat it. They have a private room you can use if you don't want to be in their restaurant.

Might be a bit far West (& eye-wateringly expensive) but Gravetye Manor is fabulous. I’d go Amberley Castle personally

rightoguvnor · 07/01/2026 19:26

Yes, I second Gravetye Manor.
it was featured on Masterchef? a good few series ago, I think it was one of the places where the contestants were sent to work, or was it on one of hose luxury hotels of the world programmes. Anyway, marvellous place.

Not mid Sussex, but near. Joanna’s Boutique Tearoom - there is one in Storrington or Chichester.
