Please can someone recommend a rice cooker for me? Ideally one where you can put other stuff in it so it’s not just plain rice. Not had one before so I don’t even know if it’s possible to put bits of veg in or soy sauce etc.

We bought this for dd for a house warming present last year. She often cooks one pot meals in it of chicken & salmon & says it's excellent.

I cook rice in my electric pressure cooker. It takes 6 minutes and is perfect every time.

I got some really really cheap thing to do very small amounts as the main rice cookers dont seem to cope with small amounts for some reason

I think most of them have some sort of saute function so you can fry up the rice before you cook it which always enhances the flavour and put spices in the oil and add onion and chopped pepper etc

I havent done more than that as we're not big rice eaters

You can put extra ingredients in with your rice in any old rice cooker. No special brand or type. So just pick any one that suits your budget and serving size.

Hi

Yes you can put veggies, sauces, and more in a rice cooker, but it depends on the model you choose. Basic rice cookers are great for perfect rice and steaming (many come with a steam tray), and some higher‑end ones have presets for grains, steam cooking, soups, slow cooking and even cakes so you can add veg or make one‑pot meals in them rather than just plain rice.
What to look for:

  • A steam tray for vegetables or fish
  • Multi‑function menus (brown rice, porridge, slow cook, etc.)
  • A keep‑warm and timer function for flexible cooking
  • Non‑stick inner pot for easy cleaning

Happy cooking! 🍚✨

I have a procook rice cooker that I bought quite cheaply from Amazon. It's a two serving one and I quite often do a portion of rice with with a bit of sesame oil and soy sauce in the cooking water, then a few veggies like broccoli, peppers and spring onions on top. When it's finished cooking, I (carefully!) open it and crack an egg on top, then leave it on the keep warm setting for five minutes until it's cooked. Very quick and healthy meal.

I’ve got the Yum Panda, it's great. It has the steam tray, the timer function and the keep, warm, as well as other programmes. I often do one pot meals in it, either mixing stuff in with the rice, or using the steam tray. I like that it doesn't need watching, and doesn't steam up my small kitchen. Have a look at the recipes on the above website.

I bake my rice in a normal oven dish with lid and it turns out perfectly every time. Two cups of boiling water to every one cup of rice, a tbsp of oil, 25 mins at 180° fan then fork and let it sit for 5 mins and it’s done. You could add anything else you want to it also.
