Substitute for chestnuts in a stew

What can I substitute for whole chestnuts in a stew?

It's a wild boar stew which already has mushrooms and chorizo in it.

I don't think there's any substitute. Parsnips have the same sort of mix of starchiness and slight sweetness, but I wouldn't risk my wild boar stew on trying it out. It will be fine if you just leave the chestnuts out.

Radishes

@MinnieMountain

Is Henry VIII coming for a banquet ?

can you not get to the shops for Chestnuts

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 29/12/2025 12:00

You could add some sweet potato cubes, or butternut squash. Not radishes, sorry, totally wrong flavour-wise!

JPA · 29/12/2025 13:16

hazelnuts/pecans/walnuts
taro/edo/jerusalem artichokes
winter squash/sweet potato/potato/parsnips/swede
chickpeas/split peas

I'd either leave them out or replace with nuts.

I'd love the recipe if you don't mind sharing. Also, where did you buy wild boar from? 🤔

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 29/12/2025 13:19

I'd leave them out and not substitute.

I love chestnuts in a stew! They are as much about texture as taste.

What’s the problem with chestnuts? Availability? Allergy? Taste?

If it’s availability, Merchant Gourmet do bags of precooked chestnuts that are fairly easily available.

MinnieMountain · 29/12/2025 13:53

The problem is that neither Lidl nor Asda sell the pre-cooked ones. We'll probably have to make a special trip to Waitrose at the other end of town.

@JDM625 it's a Rick Stein recipe. We get the wild boar from here www.wildmeat.co.uk/products/wild-boar-trim?_pos=10&_sid=da7b0ebe3&_ss=r

Thanks for the recipe and wild boar info.

Our local lidl does sell pre-cooked chestnuts in a bag. Strangely though, last year they were near the cooking ingredients and other nuts, but this year, they were near the pasta and rice! Maybe your local shop has sold out though.

Ooh, interesting ! I buy the Merchant Gourmet ones for our Xmas sausage meat stuffing ( which is cooked as a piece, cake like, rather than stuffed into the bird.

My post should have said ALDI, my local aldi sell whole, cooked chestnuts.

DH needed an excuse to pop out, so he's been to Waitrose. Phew!

Bloody Asda though. I swear they had them in a week ago. It must have been Christmas-specific stock.
