How to cook flipping shrink wrapped mince

It just stays as a brick and if you prod it in the pan it goes mushy!
Is there a technique for separating it which I haven't discovered yet?

Give up-it is impossible! I know people say they break it up with a spoon, but I don’t buy it anymore as the texture, and therefore the taste, are horrible.

sprigatito · 19/12/2025 12:38

I am a weirdo who prefers it! It’s so much easier, just bung it in the pan and break it up with a wooden spoon. Unlike the old style stuff where you have to chop it up or you get nasty ropey worms.

HansHolbein · 19/12/2025 12:39

I refuse to buy it. Not only because of that, but it looks disgusting.

MightyFlow · 19/12/2025 12:41

Just break it up with a spatula. Break it apart, don't squash it. Mine doesn't go mushy.

BetterOffNow · 19/12/2025 12:41

Those who don't buy it, is there any supermarket which sells it in a tub now? I don't think anywhere local to me has a butchers counter any more, now googling old fashioned butchers shops as I can't think of any, sad times...

It's vacuum packed, so if you open it 10 mins or so before cooking to let the air in it puffs back up.

Fiftyandme · 19/12/2025 13:00

I mush prefer it - I’ve never liked the stringy mince of my childhood.

Tescos is where I buy it from!

Really? I knew I was missing something!
Thank you 😊

I won’t buy the disgusting stuff either. Morrisons butchers mince is my go to now.

HansHolbein · 19/12/2025 13:08

I get it from M&S, still in the tubs there… for now!

I get mine from Tesco still - proper tub not the horrible shrink wrap stuff! At least the 750g one is, I don’t know about smaller packs.

Justcallmedaffodil · 19/12/2025 13:11

The mince we get from Ocado isn’t vacuum packed.

SoPunkontheInternet · 19/12/2025 13:23

Tesco still do the good old plastic box 👌🏻

BetterOffNow · 19/12/2025 13:26

Thanks everyone! Off to Tesco it is!

I agree I dont have a problem with it.

I don’t have a problem with it either. By the time it is browned it has broken up completely. I do fry it for ages though. I also don’t like the stringy bits in non-vacuum packed mince, they are harder to break up. I buy most of my meat in a farm shop or farmers’ market and it’s been vacuum packed for years.

Grumpynan · 19/12/2025 16:33

I bought a meat masher - worth every penny

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 19/12/2025 18:03

It’s awful. I get it in Tesco. Have just seen Waitrose are doing it now, or I go to the butcher and it’s wrapped in paper

Icequeen01 · 19/12/2025 23:07

I also stopped buying it from Sainsbury’s for the same reason. They also vacuum pack their diced beef and I can’t stomach that either. I buy that from Tesco now too.
