At entry-level prices, then the wine-waiter's style is by far the best.

Spending more, go for what are now Le Creuset designs although apparently none of them as are well-made as when it was the Screwpull brand. I am using a Screwpull lever which turned 24 years old yesterday. It has probably averaged two uses every three days.

Always, always go for one where you can see up the centre of the screw. The ones with a solid core (pretty much all of the butterfly designs as well as the ones you nick from hotel minibars) are terrible for older corks.

Waiters friend - mine range from 20 years old to just a couple of years old. Brilliant and well made - I used one for a total of 8 years in restaurants and it is still going strong.
