How big a piece of beef would you get for 6 adults to get a decent chunk each?

I did 750g. I think the recipe was for 6. It was a few Christmases ago. I haven't made it since- the cost of the beef alone was £40!

600g minimum

CoffeeFluff · 04/12/2025 18:57

Sorry but if this was me, no way would that be enough! I’d be doing 1.5kg

Most men I know will nail a 250g piece of steak and still be hungry. If you’re doing a showstopper, you don’t want people to be underwhelmed by portion size

I use Gordon ramsay’s recipe and he suggests 750g for four. Last time I’m pretty certain I used 1kg for five and there were leftovers but not much.

I think this is generally true but with Xmas dinner there’s usually lots of sides and puddings. So you can get away with less than normal.

Mine was for 2 people, deliberately designed for leftovers. 1 a hungry young male adult and the other my elderly mum who eats smaller adult portions. But it was a Xmas meal with a huge number of sides, so portion size could be smaller than normal. I think we cut it into 8 slices, but had to clearly watch the ends so it wasnt just pastry!!

That was the recipe I used. I'm veggie but it worked and looked amazing. I did great!!

CoffeeFluff · 04/12/2025 21:33

Not sure if I missed something but the OP didn’t say this was for Christmas dinner!

CoffeeFluff · 04/12/2025 21:35

I agree the Gordon Ramsey one is the best.

Defiantly41 · 04/12/2025 22:17

I’ve done 1kg for 4 so would get 1.25-1.5 kg for 6, there were some leftovers but not loads. If you go to a restaurant, most fillet steak portions would be 250-300g raw weight

BIWI · 04/12/2025 22:22

Delia says 800g for 4-6 people.

Gettingbysomehow · 04/12/2025 23:25

Don't forget the mushrooms.

rosyvalentine · 05/12/2025 00:30

180-200g per person.
