Can you bake a basic sponge in a loaf tin or will it make unevenly?

I bake most of my cakes in a loaf tin and they seem to be ok. The only thing is that because it's deep they can take a bit longer and the top can get overdone before the cake is fully cooked but that's fairly easily solved by putting some foil over the top towards the end.
