Pork shoulder steaks, any ideas? 💡

We usually have them char sui style or in a Korean marinade with a stir fry or rice but fancy something different. I know pork and apples are really common but I'm really not keen on cooked fruit. Any ideas? Tia 😊

Roasted with roasted carrots, red cabbage and mash plus homemade apple sauce

unleashthebook · 15/11/2025 13:41

I’ve had pork steaks with a creamy mustard sauce/mashed potatoes before and it was lovely - think it was a BBC good food recipe

ABowlOfPorridge · 15/11/2025 13:41

Schnitzel?

GiveMeWordGames · 15/11/2025 13:43

Carnitas (Mexican style slow cooked pulled pork, basically).

ICantBeDoingWithThat · 15/11/2025 13:52

I made a casserole with them last week. Cut into chunks, browned with onions, mushrooms, carrots. Paprika and a little bit of garlic. Sliced potatoes on top. Cheesy dumplings. Went down well.
Oh, and a little tomato passata.

Lemon and herb rub, served with potatoes and veg

SpiceGhoul · 16/11/2025 21:09

Thanks everyone, lots of ideas! I think I'll go with carnitas this time, hadn't even considered them! I love schnitzel but mine are always a bit rubbish and I seem to make so much mess making them 😅. Will definitely try some of the others too!

Cooked slowly in cider and onions 🤗

TheSandgroper · 19/11/2025 17:27

Braised with onion, a little brown sugar and zest and juice of some limes. Serve with broccoli and rice.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 19/11/2025 17:48

Curry, which is what my DH did when he defrosted a packet thinking it was chicken 🤣

Sorry OP this isn't the point of your thread as you're looking for recipes yourself, but how long and what temperature do you cook pork shoulder steaks when you're doing them char sui style? I fancy trying them myself.

SpiceGhoul · 20/11/2025 10:23

@Jijithecat I do mine in the air fryer at 200 for around 15 minutes depending on thickness, I turn them and baste with the excess marinade every 5 minutes. You need to keep an eye on them as the marinade can burn quite quickly. There's probably far better methods and I'm sure I've seen some people wrapping them in foil and cooking slower and finishing at a high heat but we usually have them on nights we need dinner on the table in 20 minutes.

...not to self, read the op properly before posting...

Apologies @SpiceGhoul i didn't see the bit about not liking cooked fruit 😬

SpiceGhoul · 20/11/2025 11:40

@longtompot no apology needed 😊. I may try it and just skip the apples. Plus I'm always searching Mumsnet for recipe inspiration so just because I don't like it doesn't mean it won't be helpful for someone else looking 🙂

Jijithecat · 20/11/2025 12:24

Thanks @SpiceGhoul I'll give them a try.

Hoping the marinade won't burn. I haven't yet recovered from the baked sweet potato all over the oven earlier in the week🤦‍♀️

Iamblossom · 20/11/2025 12:25

Dh uses them for pork curry

CatherinedeBourgh · 20/11/2025 12:28

My dc love pork with a cream, honey and mustard sauce.

This is delicious. I used to make a packet Somerset pork meal which dh and I loved but I don't think it's safe for my dd as she has a dairy allergy. This is very close, well, even better than that.
