Sides for Christmas steak.

We've agreed that this Christmas were going to have steak with peppercorn sauce.

This morning DH announced he'd decided (he's really stubborn, possibly autistic) that we'd have roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings braised cabbage and carrots. To me, that sounds like a roast dinner with steak instead of turkey.

The problem is I don't really like a roast dinner and I dont think these veg work with steak anyway.

There's only three of us including my veg adverse son.

Does anyone have any ideas that we could do instead.

I love asparagus, tenderstem broccoli and/or peas with steak. I have creamy garlic mushrooms or creamed spinach rather than peppercorn sauce and chips/roast potatoes to mop up the juices 😋. Can't you both have what you want since it's Christmas?

I would like potato dauphinois and asparagus but as it is Christmas I would bung some roast potatoes in the oven and do the red cabbage as well and then everyone gets what they fancy! I am on the fence with Yorkshire but would do it if it was really wanted.

Well, the yorkshire puddings I'd be fine with - great with any sort of beef!

I like mushrooms myself with a steak - big fat grilled ones or in a nice creamy sauce.

And I always think steak needs greens - sauteed tenderstem broccoli with a bit of olive oil, garlic and chilli; or creamed spinach (if plain mushrooms - not if you're doing a creamy sauce); or braised leeks or something.

I think roast potatoes are fine, or a compromise with big fat chips/wedges that are half roastie, half chip!?

Thanks for the suggestions. There's only going to be 3 of us so dont want too many choices.

No, that’s just all wrong for Christmas. If you’re going to deviate, it needs to be something special.

I’d do creamed spinach, mushrooms, tenderstem broccoli plus nice chips and pigs in blankets.
