I had a ready to eat smoked salmon fillet in my fridge that was unopened and vacumed sealed but I have just realised when throwing out the packaging that it is 2 days past use by date and now I am panicking I am going to be sick.

Does anyone think I am going to get food poisoning.

Did it smell off? Was it a use by, sell by or best before date?

You'll probably be fine. Or you won't have long to wait so.... 🤭

You’ll be fine, don’t worry.

CorvusPurpureus · 31/10/2025 20:48

Nope. A) use by dates are super conservative & b) er, it's smoked. Which is a method of preservation. c) it's vac packed.

Tbh, if you hadn't opened the packet it would have been quite up for outlasting you, I suspect. You'll be fine.

Thank you

I am usually so on top of use by dates so mad that I missed this🤦🏼‍♀️

Eat it.

I already did that’s why I have been panicking as terrified of being sick.

That will teach me to check the dates.

So, it tasted and smelt fine, otherwise you'd have checked the dates earlier.
I reckon you will be just fine.

What @CorvusPurpureus said.

And wasn’t it supposed to last all winter, once upon a time? Two days is no reason to be fretful.

I’ve eaten smoked salmon over 2 weeks past the date on the packet. Absolutely no probs. It is smoked. It would last for months on a Scottish fishing boat in years gone by!

Same. Smoked salmon is so expensive you’d best believe I’m going to eat it.
