Fawlty Towers trifle - what is it?

In the episode “Gourmet Night”, Basil Fawlty proudly removes the lid of the serving dish, expecting to see the duck he plans on serving his guests. Instead, he’s horrified to see some sort of pudding. He plunges his hands into it, searching through its interior. “Who’s for trifle?” he asks. The interior looks gelatinous, while the outside looks almost like a crust. I’ll attach a photo.

Does anyone know what the trifle is? I’ve fantasised about eating this as long as I can remember. I’ll be eternally grateful if anyone could tell me!

I expect they just concocted a prop for the scene - I’m not sure it was an actual trifle that there would be a recipe for?

on the other hand they did give a clear recipe for Waldorf salad - apple, celery, walnuts, mayonnaise. Actually dc likes celery so I’m thinking of making that

Me too! I’ve always thought it was stiff cream on the outside and sponge in the middle. More cake than trifle

Bake off last week had a free standing trifle element. Maybe that’s it.

That’s the one! Thanks! I’ve uploaded a pic too, but it’s not been approved yet. I’m glad I’m not the only one who wants to try it. I have been rewatching this episode tonight. If you get the chance, have a look. The inside looks sort of wobbly, like a thick custard or blancmange almost. Goodness knows what the outside is. I simply must have it.

I think it’s a 1970s Bombe or a version of.

I've always thought of it as being a Charlotte Russe, or some sort of bavarois.

menopausalfart · 26/10/2025 23:49

Looks like a shit load of duck liver pate.

But it won't be real, it's just a prop designed so that Basil can plunge his hand in for comedic effect.
