Cups/mls/grams for dummies

Please can someone really, REALLY dumb down the conversion from cups to mls & grams?

I have googled it and it just doesn’t make sense to me. What am I missing!?

As far as I understand an American “cup” is 250g/250mL (mL and gram are equivalent)

Cups are a volume measure, rather than a weight. As such a cup of flour, a cup of oats, a cup of sugar, and a cup of chocolate chips may all weight different amounts. So you need a conversion for each ingredient or to use cup measures.

Can you not just buy a set of cup measures? Surely that would be a lot easier than faffing about converting the recipe. They are sold literally everywhere, supermarkets, shops like B&M etc.
Just to note, sometimes the actual measurements on the cups set vary slightly between brands US/UK but it dosent matter as long as you use the same set of cups for the recipe it will work.

You just need proper measuring tools, a measuring jug and a kitchen scale. You can’t really convert between them because ml is volume and grams is mass/weight. 200ml of nails will not weigh the same as 200ml of icing sugar because they are different materials.

My 1 cup measuring cup is 236ml. If I didn’t have measuring cups, it’s roughly 1 standard coffee mug size.
