Smooth velvety red wine

Could anyone recommend a budget friendly (£10 max) delicious bottle of red wine that I could hopefully get from Sainsbury? I like medium red and nothing too oaky. I really feel like enjoying and savouring a couple of glasses of red. Thank you.

My favourite red is Yellow Tail Jammy Red Roo, its very smooth and velvety. Usually about £7.50.

Many may disagree but I don’t think you go wrong with Barefoot Merlot. I love red wine but lots give me a headache. This one doesn’t

Diablo dark red. Delicious

Apothic from Sainsbury’s . I know a good one at Majestic

PrincessofEuphrania · 11/10/2025 16:40

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I wish I could try them all! I’ll be off to Sainsbury’s shortly to see if I can find one of the above and I will report back.

If they sell it in Sainsbury's, this was rather nice.

I’m back from Sainsbury and I’ve purchased Barefoot Merlot (£7.50 with Nectar card). Ive had a little glass (delicious) and I think it will go very well with the pasta dinner I’m preparing . I’m definitely going to try each of the suggestions above but some of the reviews were saying about them being quite sweet and whilst I do have very sweet tooth I’m not sure if I want that for my wine but I’m prepared to give it a go. I only drink red wine in the autumn/winter so this will be the first bottle since last winter. Please keep the suggestions coming and I will enjoy experimenting this winter. Bon appetite and thank you so much.

@PrincessofEuphrania I’ve tried Jammy Red Roo and found it very sweet so you might not like this one. My favourite red in this price range is a Malbec and Sainsbury’s have several for under £10

CalzoneOnLegs · 11/10/2025 17:52

Barossa Ink Shiraz is superb currently £9.50 Tesco clubcard price

ETA also available in Sainsburys

PrincessofEuphrania · 11/10/2025 18:19

Ooh I might give that a go next . I do have a Tesco locally as well.

@PrincessofEuphrania it is beautiful ❤️ it is very ‘full on’ though I realise that’s not a wine description 🤣 it’s 14% ABV too.

My Tesco has the Halloween limited edition one so look out for the word ink crossed out and replaced with ‘blood’ (silly I know)

I agree with jammy red roo being sweet- I do like it but have to be in the mood, it’s almost like port.
I usually go for a Malbec if I want smooth and velvety

PrincessofEuphrania · 11/10/2025 19:26

I haven’t really tried Malbec but I will certainly give it a go. I’m also going to buy the Ink Shiraz for Halloween. I don’t think there are enough weekends in winter to try all these out but I’ll give it a go. Believe it or not I don’t actually drink that much but when I do I want it to be a real taste sensation but unfortunately I can’t spend too much.

Came here to say this.

Oh god. Probably just me but I can’t bear most of the wines suggested here. I find them very ‘pub wine’. Each to their own though

From your description I would suggest a Zinfandel. Preferably Californian. Zinfandel has very low tannins and is bold and jammy. Brazin is excellent.

South African Pinotage is the same grape so a worthy second choice alongside a Primitivo.

CalzoneOnLegs · 11/10/2025 20:08

@pontivex OP has already stated her budget and you have suggested double that 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tiredofwhataboutery · 11/10/2025 20:16

I feel like £10 a bottle is pub wine prices. Nothing wrong with that! I really like trivento reserve circa £8.65 at the coop but I think it’s in other places too.

CalzoneOnLegs · 11/10/2025 20:21

@Tiredofwhataboutery exactly ! Some nice wines in co - op actually and Fairtrade
