How To Disinfect Top Of Red Bull or Soda Can If Cashier Touched It?

I use the self check out option for checking out. When I did this a while back, I had an issue with it. The person that was there then carried a few of my red bull bottles and put it in another area. It wasn't a cashier but someone helping out with the self checkout a while back. When he did this, he literally grabbed each of the bottles by the top part where you drink from and I was upset by it. Normally you aren't suppose to do that and grab it by the side.

Now when I drink Red Bull or any can, I typically rinse the top of it with water. Then drink from it. However, this bothered me a lot. The thing is I recently starting drinking with a straw because of this for my other cans after rinsing the top with some cold water. However, the issue here is even if I do that and use a straw, the part where you push to open the can, will touch the Red Bull even if I use a straw.

How do I disinfect the top part of the can safely so I can drink from it? I thought about boiling some hot water and pouring it on a paper towel. Then typing the top area of the can with the paper towel. Would that work or is that bad? I know the top of cans are generally disgusting and you should wipe it or rinse it with water. But since this person grabbed the cans right in the middle of it, I want to have it fully clean before I drink from it. I will use a straw but the issue is I don't think I can open the can in a way where that part you open doesn't touch a part of the Red Bull?

What are you worried about happening if you drink from a can someone touched? Unless you have a very specific health vulnerability this should not be a problem, and if you don't like people touching them, a normal wash will do.

Pleasealexa · 06/10/2025 20:15

Use a glass??

PeaceReacher · 06/10/2025 20:16

Just rinse it under the cold tap.

HermioneWeasley · 06/10/2025 20:16

OP do you suffer from anxiety, because I don’t think there are any recorded cases of people catching anything from the top of cans. You don’t need to do anything.

if you’re worried about your health I’d cut out the red bull.

scoobysnaxx · 06/10/2025 20:16

Your anxiety over this is disproportionate.

Just rinse the can, drink your beverage and move on with your life.

I’d be much more concerned about the contents of the can frankly.

Rottenbanana250 · 06/10/2025 20:17

I personally wouldn't even worry about this but obviously it's an issue for you, surely you can just wipe the top with some water/washing up liquid and rinse before you pop the tab? Or pour into a glass?

RhymeOrRaisin · 06/10/2025 20:17

Do you have health anxiety? This concern seems very unusual.

I’ve drunk from probably hundreds of cans in my life without ill effect and never once considered washing them beforehand.

But you could probably soak the whole in a vinegar/water or soapy solution?

HushTheNoise · 06/10/2025 20:17

I think you might need some reassurance for your health anxiety. Also, probably the red bull is not helping. Cold water will not get rid of germs but you do need some germs for a healthy immune system. Unless you are seriously compromised by a medical condition.

individualbelief · 06/10/2025 20:17

Get the little packs of antibacterial hand wipes and use one of those?

LaminatedLou · 06/10/2025 20:18

Loads of people have touched them, probs a rat or two ran over the top in the warehouse, I wouldn’t even think about it

This. Why on Earth are you drinking Red Bull?

ObliviousCoalmine · 06/10/2025 20:19

You put the can in the fridge, and you phone your doctor to make an appointment.

AnotherVice · 06/10/2025 20:20

Maybe stop drinking Red Bull and try water from a tap? Before you fuck your heart and your kidneys?

Seawolves · 06/10/2025 20:22

I'd be more worried about the contents of the Red Bull can to be honest.

This isn't a healthy worry, your anxiety about this is disproportionate.

HewasH2O · 06/10/2025 20:22

Hello my lovely. Your other thread has just popped up as well. Are you getting help for your anxiety?

I promise you that you are at no risk from your can of Red Bull or from your frozen food. Please contact your GP and tell someone at the practice how vulnerable you are feeling.

Snorlaxo · 06/10/2025 20:24

Even if the cashier handled the can how you would
like it, the people who handled the can at other stages of the process may not have eg the person who unpacked the delivery, the people who loaded d and unloaded the delivery…

For such an anxious person, I’m surprised that you drink Red Bull considering the documented risks of energy drinks.

Wipe the can and decant it in another container to get as close to germ free as you can.

EchoedSilence · 06/10/2025 20:25

You need some help with your anxiety.

Lonelycrab · 06/10/2025 20:27

You really don’t need to worry about any of this

Ronnym · 06/10/2025 20:29

Yes I do have anxiety when it comes to these things. The thing is I think this person just came out of the bathroom as well so that is why I was concerned. So when this person grabbed the cans at the top, I was horrified by it. I should have just taken those cans and say I didn't want it but I think it was already paid for so I couldn't remove those cans.

Someone said use some washing liquid. You mean soap? Well I don't want to get any drops of soap inside me as well. So that was why I was thinking pour some boiling water into a paper towel and wipe it? Since the paper towel would be hot, that would kill the germs compared to rinsing it with cold water which I normally do? Now I know when the Red Bull or cans are put on the shelves, the person or persons who stock it probably touched the top part of it. The thing is this was done right in front me of me which bothers me.

I had opened a can where I tried to open it in a way where I could put the straw inside it without the part you push in touching any part of the Red Bull liquid but that doesn't seem possible?

I’d be concerned about drinking the crap that’s inside the red can tbh. Overthinking massively.

SepticPegsSepticLeg · 06/10/2025 20:29

Babes, a single cashier touching a can is the least of your problems. The muck, dust, multiple people, mice and rats that climb and piss all over the multipacks in the warehouses, factories and trucks before they are unpacked in the supermarket by a person who has unwashed hands is what you should be bothered about.

Cotton pads soaked in Milton solution in a small plastic baggy in your handbag would work.

TheHillIsMine · 06/10/2025 20:30

Cold water won't disinfect anything...

SirBasil · 06/10/2025 20:31

yep, the stuff inside the can is awful

Waitingfordoggo · 06/10/2025 20:31

The Red Bull itself is far more likely to impact your health than anything on the outside of the can.

@Ronnym

use soap and water and then dry it with a tea towel.
