Does anyone’s Mum have a copy of this classic 1970’s cookbook and could share the barbecue spare rib recipe? It was a favourite Saturday dinner recipe back in the day, but unfortunately the book has long since gone after it fell apart.

Oh this brought back memories! I have my mother's copy of this book (complete with recipes for brain soup).

I had to search for the actual recipe as it doesn't seem to be in the index, but here you are!

BARBEQUED SPARE RIBS

Cooking time: 1 1/2 hours
TEMP: E400ºF G no 6
Number of portions 4

Cuts to use: spare ribs cut in fairly thick chops

Ingredients:
4 thick chops
1/2 oz butter or oil
1 small onion
1 stalk celery
12 level tblspn brown sugar
2 level tsps dry mustard
1 level tsp salt
1/2 level tspn paprika pepper
2 tspns tomato paste
1 tblspn Worcestershire sauce
1/2 pint water: 1 tblspn vinegar
2 tblspns lemon juice

Preparation: Peel and chop the onion. Wash and chop the celery. Squeeze lemon juice. Mix sugar, mustard, salt and pepper with the tomato paste and the liquids

Cooking: Place the chops in a wide shallow casserole and bake uncovered for about 30 mins or until well browned. Pour off any fat. Meanwhile fry the onion in the butter until brown. Add remaining ingredients and pour over the chops. Cover and continue baking for about 3/4 hour

Accompaniments: mashed or baked potatoes and broad beans or any other green vegetable

Remainders; will reheat well in the sauce

(enjoy! I'll try and add the photo later when I have the chance ;) )

Thank you so much, I knew someone out there would have their Mum’s cookery book. I can’t wait to cook it. Thanks again for all your help.

I've got it !. My best friend gave it to me when I first moved away from my parents. It cost 10s6d, 52.5 pence, still got the old label.
That page is badly stained, I must have made that.

So many recipes I can't make any more because I can't buy things like brains.
