Storing apples

Does anyone know a reliable way of storing large quantities of apples from a tree?

I remember my GPs storing them in the loft, placed on newspaper & not touching each other - those that were left over from making cider !

I've tried the newspaper thing in the past and kept them in the shed for coolness but they didn't last really. I've noticed on those food programmes on tv that they are kept in pretty cold storage to extend their lives, I think the problem keeping them in a house is it's just not cold enough! I have a box of them now at the moment too and I've put a dozen or so actually in the fridge just to see how long they will last. I've taken a chance on some again in the newspaper but I'm intending to use them fairly fast just in case.

You need one of these.

I think everyone needs one of those. I want it to escape to let alone to store apples!
