Are evaporated and condensed milk the same?

because my recipe calls for condensed and I used evaporated.

It doesn't taste as I was expecting it to. Is it the milk?

Don't all laugh at me, if you met my mother you would be amazed that I know anything about food

mmm, 12.5kg organic condensed milk...

mawbroon · 03/06/2008 15:26

Hmm, wonder if you can use dulce de leche instead of condensed milk? It's almost the same...

MrsBadger · 03/06/2008 15:27

dulce de leche is condensed condensed milk ie cooked even longer

a dessertspoonful in a mug of hot water makes s surprisingly good hot drink though

I have just found this on here

Substitute for Condensed Milk

Q: Is there a substitute for sweetened condensed milk?

A: The best make-your-own version is to mix 1 cup of evaporated milk with 1-1/4 cups of sugar in a saucepan, heat and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved, and let cool. If you don't have evaporated milk on hand either, you can make your own by slowly simmering any quantity of milk in a pan until it reduced by 60%, and then adding the sugar.

Really, go to an Asian supermarket - there are several Indian brands too.

fryalot · 03/06/2008 15:34

fabbo!

I have added sugar to it now and it tastes ok. Not as good as yesterdays with the baby killing nestle carnation I found in the cupboard, but ok.

It will have to wait till I go to Leeds I think before I will be anywhere near an Asian supermarket.

Thanks all.

I don't feel quite as silly as I thought I would, and it did spark of quite an interesting discussion, didn't it
