Freezer disaster! Help, please!

I have accidentally left the freezer door open overnight and it has defrosted. Luckily it wasn’t completely full, but I really can’t afford to waste food. We already have tea prepared for tonight, as I made enough for two nights last night. So I need to use up the food over next few days. I’ve come up with a plan, but need to check that I’m not going to kill us all with food poisoning, so please can I have opinions if this will be okay.
Defrosted food is:
assorted vegetables and bread stuffs
minced beef, pork chops, sausages
salmon, prawns, haddock, white fish
I’m planning to shut the freezer door and let the veg and bread refreeze.
I’m cooking the mince with onions, garlic and tomatoes to provide the base for bolognese/chilli and will then refreeze it.
The pork chops have a use by date of 19th Sept, so I’m thinking I can keep them in the fridge and use on Friday.
I thought the fish items might all be alright overnight in the fridge and I can then cook a huge fish pie tomorrow to last for two nights.
I will cook the sausages and put them back in the freezer.
Do you think this will be okay? If not, is there a better way to deal with it all. Please don’t say throw it all away!

That sounds absolutely fine.

Runningischeaperthantherapy · 16/09/2025 14:25

I would just refreeze it all unless you’re catering for someone who’s immunocompromised

Raera · 16/09/2025 14:29

I think I would throw away the prawns, sorry

CatsorDogsrule · 16/09/2025 14:29

I agree with cooking then refreezing the meats. You have a good plan!

JadziaD · 16/09/2025 14:44

Yup, your plan makes perfect sense and is a good one. Bit of effort on your part though. Such a nightmare!

I had to throw an entire meat box away the other day. It was devastating.

BadgernTheGarden · 16/09/2025 14:49

Meat can be OK to refreeze if it's not fully defrosted, but safest to cook it. Bread and veg fine to refreeze although quality will suffer. Fish and prawns definitely cook.

pizzaHeart · 16/09/2025 15:12

I will cook everything including pork chops today and refreeze apart from fish pie.
Im not sure about prawns.

Kidsrold · 16/09/2025 15:42

Just in case it helps this happened to us twice (annoying teen kept leaving the door open) so I bought a cheap freezer alarm from Amazon. It has saved us several times

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/09/2025 15:46

Can the prawns go into the fish pie ?

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/09/2025 15:48

@Justpolly your plan sounds very organised, radio on in kitchen and everyone out unless they want to help with prep and washing up/wiping down KP style

Isobel201 · 16/09/2025 16:07

Your entire situation just described this episode of two doors down, Beth was cooking everything lol. Bread and veggies will be fine, meat I'd cook then freeze.

ClairDeLaLune · 16/09/2025 16:19

This happened to us! We did exactly what you’re planning - cooked all the meat and fish and ate or refroze. Nobody died! Or even got sick.

Emmz1510 · 16/09/2025 16:42

Yes your plan will be fine and safest. Are the prawns the cooked ones? If so they will also be fine in the fridge for a few days. I do this every Christmas. Prawns defrosted overnight Christmas Eve for Christmas dinner and Boxing Day dinner starters and I’m usually still snacking on them in the sauce for a couple of days after that too! They are my favourite thing.

Justpolly · 16/09/2025 17:47

Thank you all for replying. I am encouraged that most people think my plan is okay!
@JadziaD oh no! You have my sympathy. It’s gutting when you realise it’s all got to go.
@Kidsrold I didn’t know it was possible to get such a thing. I’ll get right on to Amazon. Thanks for letting me know.
@Emmz1510 that’s brilliant! It was the prawns I was most worried about really. They are the cooked ones and will definitely go in the fish pie now!

@Justpolly does anyone in the home have packed lunches as you could cook the sausages for sandwiches or baquettes, or just snacking on. 🌭

No packed lunches, but my DH would happily wolf the lot down. He’s very prone to raiding the fridge 😂

@Justpolly aaaw ! Go on then he will love them and I shouldn’t imagine they would be very palatable heated up after freezing anyway

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 16/09/2025 19:01

I'm very relaxed about UB, BBE, etc

But I'd throw away all the fish & shellfish
