What side dishes do you serve with spaghetti Bolognese?
I want to get some more vegetables into the kids, But the only thing to me that goes is garlic bread!!
I do carrots, onions, and celery in the sauce But I make a cracking Bolognese so I don’t want to add in hidden veg.
peas? Salad? What do you do?

I add grated courgette, carrot and red pepper to mine, plus red lentils

Pruveil · 11/09/2025 21:10

Jamie’s sauce will give you all the veg you need. I do though serve rocket on the side. Bit of olive oil and some Parmesan on top

soupyspoon · 11/09/2025 21:15

You dont need a side

Ive only read page one, lets hope no one 'helpfully' comes along to say its not a real dish, they dont know this in Italy, blah blah blah.

But, Italians eat salad before their meals so serve a little salad first as an appetiser. Put it in a big bowl on the table, people help themselves, then serve up the main.

As an adult a salad before or after.

When I was feeding kids they had broccoli alongside, in the bowl, next to the pasta with shaved Parmesan on top

Yes broccoli with grated Parmesan cheese is good with any pasta. Yum.

LavaLaamp · 12/09/2025 01:48

Peas?

coxesorangepippin · 12/09/2025 02:40

Cesar salad

foodie145 · 12/09/2025 15:19

Jamie Oliver and other chefs have recommended adding lentils. They’re good for you, adds fibre to the meal and are also cheaper than meat. Also good for the planet if we all cut back on our meat consumption.

I'd still rather not. I get my meat for free anyway.

Surely there has to come a point where it's not really Bolognese any more...

EvelynBeatrice · 12/09/2025 17:10

I often add chopped peppers, mushrooms and spring onions. When my kids were little I blended them well.

I was about to say exactly this.

Plus always a green salad usually with some avocado, pinenuts and black olives because no salad is complete without them. [gavel].

Mine stopped being a proper bolognese about 5 veg ago 🙈 but whilst it gets lots of veg into the kids and reduces our meat then we will keep going plus I don’t know what I would call it if not Spag Bol even though we rarely have spaghetti instead pasta or rice 🤣

stample · 12/09/2025 21:22

here it contains mince tomato onion garlic red pepper and mushroom
on the odd occasion I’ll add green beans to it to bulk it out.
nearky always have garlic bread in the side though!

Iwantsandybeachesandgoodfood · 12/09/2025 21:28

My kids have corn on the cob with bolognese. That might work for yours. I’ll be trying the broccoli with Parmesan too.

Idontknownowwhat · 12/09/2025 21:37

I serve chopped peppers, cucumber and carrot sticks/ grated carrot.
My kids are salad dodgers so I always start em with it.
Follow with 2 or 3 fresh fruits.

CharlieUniformNovemberTango2023 · 12/09/2025 21:42

I also put a pepper in my spagbol

londongirl12 · 12/09/2025 22:08

My DGM used to do peas and carrots on the side. I still have that now as it makes me think of her.

LoafofSellotape · 12/09/2025 22:12

We have romane lettuce with tomatoes, cucumber, red onion and black kalamata olives.
