Daal recipe

Does anyone have an easy (and delicious) daal recipe that I can make. I have two cans of green lentils in the cupboard, but can nip to the shops.

I recently had a daal and potato one at a Pakistani friend's and it was amazing, but their mum made it from scratch and I haven't got the recipe yet.

Green lentils aren’t what you’d use for dal because they don’t break down. But a packet of red lentils is about 50p. Or the yellow split peas. This is a really nice, easy recipe I make a lot: https://meerasodha.com/recipes/daily-dal/

I prefer a basic daal without coconut. I really like recipes that pop some fresh tomato in at the end. And make sure you use fresh ginger not the “quick” pre-mushed stuff, and also I recommend using more garlic and onion than you think you need. And if the recipe wants you to caramelize the onion then really do so - the flavour is better.

Thanks all. I'll go shopping in a bit and grab the right lentils!! 🤣

Let's us know if you do get the recipe from your friend @StopRainingNow

Glad you are buying the correct lentils OP.

I make up a few jars of this dhal mix at a time. It tastes good as it is or you can play around and add fresh tomatoes, coconut, sweet potato etc… it’s wonderful.

This is the simplest, quickest dal you can make. Have a jar of the mix in the cupboard for when hunger strikes.

Surely red lentils always need to be well-washed before cooking ?

I haven’t died yet 😊

Seriously I think the washing lentils isn’t necessary these days as long as you are buying a decent brand.

I made this today. It's really nice. I had to put more fluid in it though as it dried up A LOT as it cooked!
