God save me from crappy tin openers

I cant remember how many we must have had over the years. I think the current one is an OXO one or something like that

It cuts the lid in such a way that you have to prise the lid off, its got sharp edges and one side of the lid dips down into the liquid or whatever as you're going round so you end up with mess at the top. Hate it

And frequently, like today, it doesnt cut all the way round so you have bits that are still stuck, today it didnt cut all the way through on two small bits opposite side to each other, so as I was trying to get it off and didnt see this initially it pressed right into the liquid and it went everywhere and of course Im at risk of cutting myself.

We've had ones where it leaves a nice smooth rolled edge and I cant remember now why that one ended up in the bin, they all seem to work for a while and then never again sort of thing

Im not sure I want an electric one, its got to go in the drawer.

The Kuhn rikon 5 in 1. Mine must be over 15 years old and still working perfectly.

I think it's personal - we've got two because I can't use DP's and she can't use mine.

Try being left handed. That is all.

I hate the damned things.

Try the kuhn rikon, I’m left handed and have no issues using it.

Brabantia. I complained to Frey Bentos many years ago about how difficult it was to get the lids off their pies, and I’m pretty sure they sent it to me. Still going strong and much better than the butterfly ones.

You should get an electric one, I know you say you don’t want one but it’s amazing. Mine even holds the can so I could walk away and the can will just stay in place. The amount of heartache that little guy has saved…oh and it sharpens knives too. There is a knack to it so we were sweating until we mastered it. I couldn’t go back to a manual opener ever again.

I live this one. Used it in a cafe with the extra big tins with no issues as well - I could never use the massive things restaurants usually use. I really must get one for home, but need it so infrequently I forget.

Someone on MN recommended this one (I got it on Amazon) and it removed the lid so that it is replaceable on the tin, and without mess or sharp bits. www.lantana-home.com/lantana-2-in-1-safety-can-opener/

It's not the can openers. It's the cans.

I gave up on hand held ones and have had an electric, Kenwood one for 21yrs! I bought it from Sainsburys. Mine is a much older version of the white one:

I know you don't want an electric one, but I love mine. When we renovated and lived in a caravan, I had 1m2 of work space and it still had a place on my extremely limited work top.

I've got a Zyliss which I've had for donkey's years, it's so old I can't even find it online! But it's been great. I also recently bought a Lantana which leaves smooth edges on both the tin and the top. Can't speak for longevity as I've not had it for long, but love how there are no jagged edges!

I've had an electric one on my counter for years, £15, Amazon, works a treat.
