Decent 11am school snack/two smaller lunches

7 replies

My child starts secondary school next month, and they have a fairly late lunch break at 1.30pm, with a morning break at 11.00.

DC is a slow eater, so I wanted to pack a decent (filling, healthy and socially acceptable!) snack for 11am, and then a smaller lunch, or they won't have time to eat it all at 1.30pm.

Any ideas for a decent snack? Was thinking babybels, maybe cheese scones or wholemeal muffins... All ideas welcome.

Small pot of greek yoghurt but they would need a spoon so not sure how feasible this is

Mine take a homemade flapjack and fruit with a sandwich or wrap and crisps - they eat everything but the sandwich at 11 and the sandwich at 1.30 . I hide fruit and seeds in the flapjack - reckon they are about 250calories each . Don’t give them anything g messy or too slow to eat - mine prefer rolls or wraps and easy fruit like apples- if anything like mine they will standing eating on the corner of the field

@Ebenezerscrogge , would love your recipe for the flapjack if you have it to hand please. This is exactly the kind of thing I was thinking.

Thanks for the tip about rolls or wraps, DC had filled pitta in primary school as found that easier to eat than sandwiches, so will keep them in the mix too.

A little pot of hummus and some bit of carrot or pepper?

@ohwhattodo1 its a BBC one https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/yummy-golden-syrup-flapjacks

I add milled seeds and hempseed to it and often dried fruit , sometimes chocolate chip as well - the recipe easily copes with another 50g if not a little more , of extra dried ingredients without getting dry .

Like the sound of another posters banana bread - might try that on mine too

I think the key is making sure eating doesn’t get in the way of socialising

should have said may need to check school policy on nuts and seeds . DSs school doesn’t have a policy and DS2 school is no nuts but seeds allowed

Bake these 4-ingredient flapjacks – they're easy to make and ready in half an hour. Add chocolate drops, desiccated coconut or sultanas, if you like
