Right , I'm an waitrose bred food snob, but by golly, I've been impressed by Aldi....

Was tempted there by the fruit and veg for 59p and have been very pleased indeed
Small stores, so only takes 30-45 mins to get around
Lovely bakery stuff, cured meats/hams, reasonable fruit and vegetables, lovely lovely biscuits, and fab take-off cereals, which I remove from wrong packet, place in old box at home so that the food snobs there don't complain, and a great range of tasty fruit juices.
V cheap cleaning products etc
saved me loads of money, about £30 off a weekly shop (family of 4)

Drawbacks, quite scary cashiers who scan faster than the spped of light, very stern, sometimes you can't get all you need, i have to do a small £10 top up shop , and I don't think I'd buy my meat there.

I'm an Aldi convert too!!
Completely agree about biscuits and cereals and cleaning products.
I was very scared by the cashier too and the alarming speed with which she dumped my purchases into my trolley!! All a bit brusque for my soft Sainsburys persona

DarrellRivers · 28/05/2008 17:01

I think she spotted my old ocado bags and also the fact she had to show me how to push the trolly around the other way so she could -tip- gently place my purchases in it, marked my card as a novice

Have to do that for ds for his chochorice Coco Pops from Lidl!

Twiglett · 28/05/2008 17:12

we have an aldi (or it could be a lidl) in the next shopping district .. all the food is in cardboard boxes / on pallets .. it scares me ... keep meaning to go though

popsycal · 28/05/2008 17:12

cashiers are scary but definitely worth a visit

get some of their anti wrinkle night moisturiser (avoid day cream as it stinks). It has some stuff in it that only is found is v expensive stuff normally.

UnquietDad · 28/05/2008 17:17

are you this person?!

DarrellRivers · 28/05/2008 17:18

twig, the food looked like it was on normal shelves in Aldi [soothing tone]

No but it was some previous article in the torytelegraph which catalysed me into action, will search for it.

I usually shop in Waitrose or Sainsburys, last week I tried a very small Aldi near by, just for cleaning products, tinned tomato, pasta, parmesan, and rice.

I came home and typed all the products into Sainsburys online store, the total would have been just over £41, but from Aldi it cost £26

I will definitely be going back and trying a few more things too.

DarrellRivers · 28/05/2008 17:32

They had a sewing machine for sale too.

Aldi and Lidl are quality german stuff. Look out for the offers they import from other Aldis and Lidls once a year. you should be able to get your hands on selected genuine french food - and it is very good at aldi.

there is no snobbery in Germany, everyone knows about aldi quality and prices!
